The best Dallas Cowboys player to wear No. 0 is an easy call (but only by default)

As we roll through this list of the best Dallas Cowboys players to wear every jersey number, there will obviously be a lot of easy calls to make, given the list of legends that have suited up for America's Team over the 65-plus-year history of the franchise.

But as we kick things off, we've got a different kind of no-brainer, as there has literally been only one player to don the No. 0 jersey, that being linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.

A few players around the league wore No. 0 way back in the day, but in 1973, the NFL banned both No. 0 and No. 00 as part of a league-wide effort to standardize uniform numbers by position group. Restrictions were loosened a bit in April 2021, and in March 2023, the league officially lifted the 50-year ban on No. 0, permitting any player outside of offensive and defensive linemen to wear it. The ban on No. 00 remains in effect.

Taken by the Cowboys in the third round of the 2023 draft with the 90th overall pick, Overshown had worn the No. 0 during the final few years of his run with the Texas Longhorns. But it wasn't until 2025 that he donned it for Dallas.

Initially, Overshown was assigned No. 35, as veteran safety Jayron Kearse was set to wear No. 0 during the 2023 season after the league changed its policy, only to end up wearing No. 1 instead.

Overshown ultimately only wore No. 35 twice in game action, as his rookie campaign was cut short after suffering a torn ACL in the Cowboys' second preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Upon his return in 2024, the Texas native wore No. 13 and had a solid season, tallying 90 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks, four passes defended, and a pick-six interception in 13 games before suffering a torn ACL, MCL, and PCL in a Week 14 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals.

In April 2025, Overshown officially became the first Cowboys player to be assigned No. 0, and he credited Jerry Jones' grandson, Paxton Anderson, with whom he'd teamed at Texas, for helping to make that happen.

Due to the severity of his injury, Overshown missed the first nine games of the 2025 season but finally hit the field wearing No. 0 in a Week 11 win over the Las Vegas Raiders and ultimately tallied 28 total tackles for the year in six appearances.

Cowboys fans will now wait to see how he fares with the number moving forward.
