Welcome back to our 100-part series on the greatest Dallas Cowboys players to wear every jersey number ranging from No. 0 all the way to No. 99.

After having a couple of tough decisions to make at Nos. 5 and 6, we've got it a bit easier here at No. 7. But before we get to our winner, let's first have a look at every player who has worn the number for America's Team over the years.

  • Steve Beuerlein, QB
  • Randall Cunningham, QB
  • Trevon Diggs, CB
  • Ben DiNucci, QB
  • Rashan Gary, DL
  • Martin Gramatica, K
  • Drew Henson, QB
  • Chad Hutchinson, QB
  • Stephen McGee, QB
  • Cooper Rush, QB

Now, if this were a competition to determine which player on this list was the best ever to wear No. 7 for any team, the clear-cut winner is obviously Randall Cunningham. But as this race is to determine the best to wear the number while with the Cowboys, that's certainly not the case, as he played just one season in Dallas in 2000, going 1-2 in three starts.

As such, the actual clear-cut winner here, of course, is Trevon Diggs.

Trevon Diggs played just 22 games for the Cowboys after receiving his $97.5 million contract

After being taken by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft with the 51st overall selection, Diggs wasted little time in becoming one of the top cornerbacks in the league.

Following a solid rookie campaign in which he tallied three interceptions, the Alabama alum broke out something fierce in his second season, leading the NFL with an incredible 11 interceptions to tie the franchise record set by Everson Walls in 1981.

Those 11 picks were also good for a tie for the fourth-most of any player in league history, and he was rewarded with a trip to the Pro Bowl and a First-Team All-Pro selection, thus becoming the first Cowboys cornerback to receive the latter honor since Deion Sanders in 1999.

And after earning a second consecutive Pro Bowl selection in 2022, Diggs was rewarded with a massive five-year contract extension worth $97 million that could have maxed out at $104 million with incentives. But just as quickly as he rose to stardom came the fall from grace.

After just two games in 2023, the Maryland native suffered a torn left ACL in practice, bringing his campaign to a close. He played 11 games in 2024, but he was clearly not a full strength, and he ultimately underwent surgery to repair an injury in that same left knee.

Diggs continued to have knee problems in 2025, but he played through the pain to start the season, appearing in six games before a controversial concussion sustained at home put him out of action for more than two months.

He returned in late December and appeared in two games, but after more controversy, this time stemming from a travel-related issue following the Cowboys' Christmas Day game in his home state against the Washington Commanders, he was released and closed out the year with the Green Bay Packers.

Over those final three seasons in Dallas, Diggs played just 22 games and recorded only three interceptions. Nevertheless, those early years give him this title of the best Cowboys player ever to wear No. 7.
