Welcome back once again to our series on the best Dallas Cowboys players to wear every jersey number from No. 0 to No. 99.
After not having to think at all about our first entry at No. 0—and we say that in the most literal sense, as there's only been one player in franchise history to wear it—we did have some decisions to make at Nos. 1, 2, and 3. But here at No. 4, while there are five options from which to choose, this is another no-brainer, as the clear-cut call here is obviously Dak Prescott.
Just for kicks, though, here's a quick look at the entire list.
- Toby Gowin, P
- Micah Knorr, P
- Dak Prescott
- Mike Saxon, P
- Shaun Suisham, K
If forced to pick a runner-up from this list, the easy call is punter Mike Saxon, who was actually the first to don the digit for Dallas and wore it from 1985 to 1992, winning a Super Bowl in his final year with the club. With 24,542 punting yards to his credit in a Cowboys uniform, he remains the franchise's all-time leader.
But again, the no-brainer pick here is Prescott, who may just be the last to wear No. 4. While the Cowboys don't officially retire numbers, it's hard to see someone else sporting it down the line, especially once Dak is inducted into the team's famed Ring of Honor, which one has to assume is a certainty at some point.
Dak Prescott has put up some monster numbers for the Dallas Cowboys
A two-time First-Team All-SEC selection at Mississippi State, Prescott was taken in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft and was seen as the eventual successor to an aging Tony Romo.
Prescott, who was assigned No. 10 before switching to No. 4 during rookie minicamp, actually went into his first pro season as QB3 on the Dallas depth chart behind Romo and Kellen Moore. But after Moore broke his right tibia during the first week of training camp and Romo suffered a vertebral compression fracture during the Cowboys' third preseason game, Prescott was thrust into the QB1 role and simply never gave it back, even when Romo was ready to return a few months into the regular season.
Dak ultimately led the Cowboys to a 13-3 regular-season record, thus setting a new team record for the most wins by a rookie quarterback and becoming just the second in NFL history to record as many victories as a rookie, joining Ben Roethlisberger.
He also set team rookie records for the most completions in a single game (32), the most completions in a season (311), the most passing yards in a season (3,667), the most touchdown passes in a season (23), the highest passer rating in a single game (148.3), the highest passer rating in a season (104.9), and the most fourth-quarter comebacks (five), among others. With such a successful season, Prescott was named Offensive Rookie of the Year, beating out teammate Ezekiel Elliott, took sixth place in the NFL MVP voting, and earned a trip to the Pro Bowl.
In the years since, Prescott has continued to tally monster numbers for America's Team and has set several more franchise records in the process.
Through the 2025 season, his 66.9 completion percentage is the highest of any quarterback in Dallas history with more than 150 pass attempts, as is his 98.3 career passer rating. The four-time Pro Bowler is also the Cowboys' all-time leader in passing yards with 35,989, breaking Romo's previous record of 34,183. He came close to breaking Romo's single-season yardage record of 4,903 but literally fell one yard short with a career-high 4,902 in 2019.
Prescott also owns the Cowboys' single-season record for touchdowns, tossing 37 in 2021, and he'll soon set the new mark for career TD passes, as his 243 are second only to Romo's 248. Dak is also on the cusp of becoming the franchise's all-time leader in victories, as his 83 regular-season wins rank third behind only Roger Staubach's 85 and Troy Aikman's 94.
The big thing missing from Prescott's resume, of course, as it goes with Romo, is a Super Bowl victory, as Dak has gone just 2-5 in the postseason. Even without that playoff success, though, he's unquestionably one of the greatest quarterbacks in Cowboys history and obviously the best to wear No. 4.
