Cowboys' Super Bowl 61 (and NFC East) odds are better than you might think

As hard as it may be to believe, with Week 6 officially in the books, we're now already a third of the way through this 2026 NFL season. And it's certainly no secret that things haven't gone the way the Dallas Cowboys (or their fans) had hoped.

After opening the campaign with a road loss to the New York Giants, America's Team took an easy win in its home opener over the Washington Commanders. A heartbreaking loss to the Baltimore Ravens followed in Week 3, but Dallas again got back to .500 the following week with a wild win over the Houston Texans.

But after a disheartening defeat to the then-winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5 and an embarrassing loss to the Green Bay Packers this past Sunday night, the Cowboys find themselves at 2-4.

Given the overall state of the NFC East, which is currently led by the Giants at 3-2-1, things could certainly be worse for Brian Schottenheimer's squad.

It may not feel like that to fans at times, but it's true, and NFL oddsmakers certainly seem to believe that the Cowboys can make a run at the postseason, as they have the best odds of any team in the division to win Super Bowl 61, which naturally also means they have the best odds to win the East for the first time since 2023.

As you can see, Dallas cracked the top half of the list by the slimmest of margins, sitting in solo 16th at +3500.

Now, what's interesting is that while the Cowboys rank eighth overall among NFC teams to lift the Lombardi, sitting just above the NFC South-leading Carolina Panthers (+4000), they rank ninth in terms of representing the conference, and it's not a small gap, with Dallas sitting at +2050 and Carolina at +1275. So, that's a little strange, but it is what it is, I suppose.

As mentioned above, the Cowboys have the best odds of the four NFC East teams, with the Giants and the Washington Commanders both at +12500 and the Philadelphia Eagles, who will be without Jalen Hurts for the rest of the year, sitting all the way down near the bottom at +20000.

When it comes to just the division itself, Dallas has the narrow edge at +130, with New York sitting in close second at +154. Washington comes in third at +600, with the Birds bringing up the rear at +700.

So, again, while the Cowboys are not playing great football at the moment, oddsmakers seem to like their chances to at least get back to the playoffs, where anything can happen. The fact that Dallas has the third-easiest remaining strength of schedule may have also factored in here, but as the Bucs game proved, that doesn't always mean what it's supposed to mean.

If you're a regular reader here at The Landry Hat, then you know that we've taken several looks at these Super Bowl 61 odds as the year has progressed.

In the immediate aftermath of Super Bowl 60, we took a look at the way-too-early odds for this next edition in February, and at that time, the Cowboys sat in solo 17th overall with the same +3500 odds they have now.

We took another look following the initial wave of free agency in March, and they'd improved to +3000. They improved again just after April's draft to +2500, which was also what they were heading into Week 1.

So, while the odds have naturally dipped with a 2-4 start, it's worth repeating one final time that things could undoubtedly be worse. We now just have to wait and see how these next 12 weeks play out.
