For a team that loves to be in the headlines, the Dallas Cowboys may have had a social media oopsy thanks to one of its players this week.

On Wednesday, running back Ezekiel Elliott posted a picture to his Instagram stories (with no caption or explanation) of what appears to be a throwback helmet. The photo gave fans a glimpse at the promised throwback uniforms the Cowboys are supposed to be wearing this Thanksgiving against the New York Giants.

Back in March, Charlotte Jones made an official announcement that after the NFL loosened up rules about uniforms, the team would be bringing throwback uniforms back for the yearly Thanksgiving contest.

This got fans incredibly excited, but it appears that Elliott didn’t quite have permission — or didn’t know that he didn’t. When the idea was revealed six months ago, there were no photos displayed. Based on the ensuing reaction, it appeared Elliott may have leaked something he shouldn’t have.

I guess the well-kept secret is no longer kept. The Cowboys did previously reveal a new “arctic” helmet back in September, but that was the helmet to be worn in the Week 17 contest against the Tennessee Titans.

Within minutes the photo of the helmet was all over social media. The FOX Sports NFL account even got a hold of it and used it as a way to plug the fact that they’ll be the ones broadcasting the game that will feature these throwback uniforms.

The Cowboys’ social media department clearly heard about the leak and decided to respond by retweeting FOX’s tweet with the caption “C,mon bruh” and tagging the running back in it.

Whether a surprise about the helmets is ruined or not, everyone should remain excited about this matchup. Before the season, people were worried a game against the Giants on Thanksgiving would be a boring blowout. That was before the NFC East became the best division in football and New York shocked the world by starting the first half of the year at 6-2, tied with the Cowboys.

Now, this game has serious implications for both the division title and the playoff standings. Get ready for some throwbacks, turkey, and football!
