Tony Romo – CBS Color Commentator

I had the opportunity to speak with Tony Romo just before the season started. And I asked him if coaching football was on his bucket list. He told me it was something he might consider doing in the future. But right now, with his kids being the age they are and his booming broadcasting career, he’s comfortable right where he’s at.

But things change. And at the time that we spoke, the Cowboys’ head coaching position wasn’t vacant. It’s still not. But if it becomes available, it’s hard not to imagine Jerry Jones picking up the phone and asking Romo if he’s still comfortable sitting in a booth. Historically, the opportunity to be the head coach of America’s Team doesn’t come around often.

In fact, now in its 60th season, for nearly 39 years the position has been occupied by two men. Tom Landry and Jason Garrett. It could be another decade before Romo is given this chance again. And everything we hear during one of his CBS broadcasts would seem to indicate he’d be a fantastic head coach.

If given the opportunity to take the reins of the Dallas Cowboys, would Tony Romo really say no? Especially to a salesman like Jerry Jones? And let’s not forget that comfortability doesn’t do much to satisfy a competitive nature. There’s a reason Romo is still competing in those professional golfing tournaments.
