A season of nonstop drama for All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs has ended with the Cowboys waiving him before Week 18.

Cowboys fans saw this coming, but to happen before the last game of the season was unexpected. From the beginning of the season, Diggs has been outspoken about Jerry Jones trading away one of his best friends, Micah Parsons, to the Green Bay Packers.

Months before the blockbuster trade occurred, Diggs was fined $500,000 for rehabbing away from the team, and the Parsons trade obviously broke him into pieces. It was time for the Cowboys to make a change, but the bond between the Cowboys' front office and the veteran corner had already been broken for months.

Trevon Diggs' departure with Dallas Cowboys was written on the wall for months

It's easy to be deflated when one of your best friends was traded away, but his last season in Dallas was almost nonexistent, as Diggs was forced to miss eight games due to a concussion he suffered at his house. Parsons even became a backup voice for his former teammate and called out Dallas after Diggs was put on injured reserve earlier this season.

It sure felt over for Diggs' tenure in Dallas when Brian Schottenheimer admitted his cornerback was healthy, but also challenged him to prove he was more than just healthy to get back on the field. Diggs also had a history of steamrolling his own defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus, after an embarrassing loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Of course, any Cowboys fan loves a good Eberflus roast, but it shows how the Dallas defensive back was already fed up with the team this season. It was only a matter of time until Jerry Jones was going to give the boot to Diggs.

His 2021 season, where he led the NFL in interceptions (11), will always be remembered as his best. However, years later, he struggled massively in coverage. Per PFF, opposing quarterbacks have had a perfect 158.3 passer rating when targeting a receiver covered by Diggs this season.

Since signing a five-year, $97 million contract in 2023, he has only played in 21 games. Injuries take their toll, but Jones decided it was time to end the Diggs project.

The writing was on the wall for Diggs to leave Dallas long before 2025, and now, he hopes to join a playoff team on a short route to the Super Bowl.
