When Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs recorded an astounding 11 interceptions and was named a First Team All-Pro in his second season, fans thought the Alabama product would wear a star on his helmet in perpetuity. 2025 has now ensured that the situation will never come to pass.

After the Micah Parsons trade soured relations between Diggs and Dallas, his injury history and unspeakable play on the field made him look like someone who very clearly was not going to be a part of the long-term furniture. The Cowboys ripped the Band-Aid off rather than delay the inevitable.

Dallas waived Diggs after six seasons. While Matt Eberflus' defense has not been kind to many of Dallas' best players, watching Diggs devolve from someone once regarded as an elite player to someone who was allowing big plays in an almost comical fashion, this was the only move to make.

Cowboys release CB Stefon Diggs

In a stat that seems almost impossible to believe, Diggs has allowed almost 18 yards per reception when targeted and surrendered a perfect passer rating. Diggs, when healthy (which wasn't always a guarantee this season), was the worst cornerback in the NFL this season.

Diggs plays a very risky style of football, often allowing some big gains to gamble on interceptions. With injuries sapping his effectiveness, Diggs is now a poor run defender without the athleticism needed to cover a ton of ground on the back end of the secondary.

Anyone who signs Diggs after Dallas will need to put him in a very specific scheme. Diggs also shouldn't be guaranteed a starting spot, as he will have earned that off his name recognition rather than his actual play on the field. The fall from grace is officially complete, and the fall was so swift that Diggs will almost assuredly need to sign a "prove-it" deal as a role player next offseason.

Fans will always remember those first few years in Dallas, but after he got paid, Diggs has been very disappointing. It's a shame to see his time as a Cowboy end like this, but with how deteriorated the relationship has become, this release seemed like something inevitable.
