Just a few years ago, the Dallas Cowboys thought they stumbled upon one of the best defenders in football in Trevon Diggs, and those days feel like a distant memory. Since his 11-interception campaign in 2021, his production has taken a dip, but nobody was expecting it to play out like this.
After spending most of the season on IR dealing with concussion symptoms, the Cowboys cut him and he was claimed by the Green Bay Packers. But just as quickly as his time in Green Bay started, it's over, as it's reported that the Packers are releasing Diggs after suiting up in just one game with them.
The 27-year-old had such a bright future not too long ago, but his story is proof that life comes at you fast in the NFL. He was expected to be a Cowboys lifer, but at this point, it isn't insane to suggest that his career could be on life support, which is incredibly sad to see for such a talented player.
Trevon Diggs to be released by the Packers after playing just one game
The Alabama product was a Pro Bowler in 2021 and 2022, but hasn't played a full 17-game season since 2022, which lines up with when he was paid. Jerry Jones signed Diggs to a five-year, $97 million extension just weeks before the 2023 season, which included over $42 million in guaranteed money.
In 2024, he struggled to adjust to the defensive coordinator change from Dan Quinn to Mike Zimmer, and the change to Matt Eberflus this year made things even worse. Diggs went from one of the most promising young corners in football to league average, if that, which is mainly due to health problems.
The 2020 second-round pick was cut by the team after a dispute over a team flight, but it was also done to recoup cap space for a Dallas team that led the NFL in payroll in 2025. After landing in Green Bay, the expectation was that he would revive his career, but instead, the opposite happened.
The Cowboys saw Diggs become a shell of the player he once was after landing that big-money deal, and that continued in Green Bay. He played just one snap in the playoffs against the Bears and it did not go well, which just confirmed he's not the player he once was, but this karma isn't very sweet.
