With the Dallas Cowboys’ season officially over, fans will now be rooting against the Philadelphia Eagles for obvious reasons and the Green Bay Packers in the hopes of securing the best possible draft pick.

Not only does Dallas own Green Bay’s first-round pick this year, but the Packers have also been the Cowboys’ foremost boogeyman of the past decade. And another layer was added to the rivalry when they claimed Trevon Diggs off waivers after his release by America’s Team.

Even though Diggs joined the Packers midweek, he still played in Sunday’s game against the Vikings. Despite a limited snap share, Green Bay fans couldn’t help but gush over the former All-Pro after he finished as the team’s highest-graded defender, earning an 81.5 grade from Pro Football Focus.

Packers fans are tricking themselves into thinking ex-Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs is good again

Rest assured, Diggs' shortcomings as a tackler will rear their ugly head in the playoffs. The optimism in the above post speaks to the state of the Packers' cornerback room.

While Diggs acquitted himself well in his debut, he was only targeted once on 18 coverage snaps. He totaled 33 snaps and made two tackles, and one defensive stop. Based on PFF's grading, that was Diggs' second-best game of the season. He ironically posted an 83.3 grade in the Cowboys' Week 4 tie against the Packers.

It was a fine debut, but nothing to write home about. After all, the Packers were up against J.J. McCarthy and Max Brosmer once McCarthy left injured. You would be hard-pressed to name a worse quarterback duo in the NFL.

Diggs will face a much tougher test in Green Bay’s Wild Card showdown against Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears. Regardless of whether Diggs starts, it stands to reason that Bears head coach and play-caller Ben Johnson will look to attack his weaknesses. After all, the 27-year-old has allowed a 158.3 passer rating this season, along with a staggering 17.9 yards per catch.

While Diggs might be playing with better effort now that he's out of Dallas, he remains a highly volatile cornerback who's susceptible to explosive plays. He still has the ball skills to turn a game on its head, but his ball production has fallen off a cliff over the last four seasons.

Holding your own against McCarthy and Brosmer in a low-stakes game is one thing. Turning up against the Bears at Soldier Field with a ticket to the Divisional Round on the line is a different beast.

Time will tell if Diggs is up to the task.
