Dallas Cowboys fans have had a bone to pick with Jerry Jones for what feels like forever. Even though they've been consistently competitive since the late 90s, the Cowboys haven't been to a Super Bowl since their last championship in 1995, and this franchise is holding on too tightly to the past.
Jones is a really good owner, but the same can't be said for his role as general manager. The boneheaded and penny-pinching decisions have really stacked up over the years, which led ex-NFL defensive lineman and former ESPN radio host Mike Golic to make a critical remark about the 83-year-old.
Asked by RJ Ochoa of Blogging The Boys to provide his most rational take for "why things are the way that they are" with the Cowboys, Golic -- without hesitation -- said that Jones should not be the general manager.
"Jerry Jones needs to not be the GM. I think he needs to be the owner," Golic said. "Obviously, the defense needs to get worked on. He struggles paying people on time, but he does eventually pay them. Now, Micah (Parsons), I didn't agree with trading him.
But he did pay Dak (Prescott), he did pay CeeDee (Lamb). He pays the better players eventually, but he goes through such a process that just ticks them all off. But I also don't think he should be the GM."

Jerry Jones is hurting the Dallas Cowboys as their general manager
Cowboys fans have felt strongly for the better part of 20 years -- if not longer -- that Jones isn't cut out to be the team's general manager.
The Cowboys are one of the most illustrious franchises in pro sports for good reason, but Jerry is the main reason they haven't been able to get over the hump. He made them the most valuable pro sports franchise in the world, but that should have no bearing on his status as the ultimate decision-maker.
Honestly, it's an ego thing, since the 83-year-old wants to be the one to call the shots and bring America's Team back, but a change is long overdue. It's been 30 years since they've even made the NFC Championship, let alone the Super Bowl, and it's long overdue to stop clinging to the glory days.
Whether it be trading away Micah Parsons for far too little, dragging out contract extensions, or hiring and firing the wrong people, this franchise has become the butt of too many jokes because of Jones' choices. Jerry is too often fueled by pettiness, and many of his ideas lead many to believe he's stuck in the 90s.
I don't know many general managers who have done a mediocre job for three decades and are still employed, but this situation is such a catch-22. It's not like he'll ever get fired, so it would require him to step down or retire under his own accord, and there's absolutely no chance of that ever happening.
Golic made a great point about Jones waiting too long to pay his players, even if he pays them eventually. But he also tends to overpay them. For as great as Dak Prescott is, he doesn't deserve to make $60 million per season, but since Jerry waited until the eleventh hour to sign him, it was impossible for him not to make Prescott the game's highest-paid quarterback.
For 31 other NFL teams, the owner and GM are not one and the same. There's one job he does a fantastic job at and one job he doesn't, so the Cowboys' thought process should be fairly obvious, but he's too blinded by ego to ever let that happen, even if it serves to benefit the team more.
Golic hit the nail square on the head with this one because there have been too many wasted seasons in The Lone Star state.
