The Dallas Cowboys hit the field Tuesday for their first practice in Oxnard for training camp. Already the headlines are writing themselves for what is happening off the field. One of the biggest is the status of Micah Parsons' contract negotiations.
Parsons spoke with the media for the first time in a while following practice. What he said when asked about his new contract has to send chills down every Cowboys fans' spine. Parsons has remained positive a deal will get done during the process, but when a player starts to believe that this could be the end of his time with a franchise it is scary.
If this is the end, this is the end ...I understand the nature of the business," Parsons said, via Nick Harris of the Forth Worth Star-Telegram.
For the first time that I can recall, Cowboys DE Micah Parsons expressed some doubt in an extension getting done:

Micah Parsons' latest contract comments should terrify Cowboys owner Jerry Jones
Once again,Jerry Jones has committed a bad fumble. This movie has played itself out over and over again with the players ultimately winning and getting paid, but the process is completely backwards. Last offseason, CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott did not get their new contracts done until right before the season started and the same could be playing out with Micah Parsons.
While Lamb never expressed doubts about his future with the team, Dak Prescott took a similar stance to Parsons as far as teasing a potential exit in free agency the following year. Regardless, to hear Parsons talk about this being end is just something that is hard for fans to stomach.
Other top pass rushers like Myles Garrett, Maxx Crosby and T.J. Watt have all gotten their money this offseason and the assumption is Parsons will get his soon.

During his opening press conference yesterday Jones did not do himself any favors by talking down about Parsons. Comparing the idea of getting a deal done with Parsons to paying Prescott all that money last season just for him to miss most of the season was uncalled for. Yes, Parsons also missed time, but for Jerry to bring that up as an excuse for not getting a deal done is ridiculous.
Parsons' comments should also be seen as him and his agent playing their next move. The pressure has to shift back to Jones and really give him a sense of "now or never". The Cowboys' owner is once again fighting a battle he cannot win. When that player is Micah Parsons you do not hesitate to get a deal done.
While realistically Parsons could play this season without a long-term contract in place, a player of his caliber should not be left vulnerable. If his recent comments do not give Jerry that sense of urgency then it is hard to determine what will.
Other teams will inquire about trades soon if a deal is not in place and the last thing this defense needs to lose is their leader. They would crash and burn without Parsons, plain and simple.
