Dallas Cowboys training camp is officially underway in Oxnard. As hard as Jerry Jones tried to dampen the excitement in Monday's press conference, the team has hit the field for its first of 16 practices open to the media.
While Brian Schottenheimer has promised that camp will be physical, the initial practices will be on the lighter side. It will be difficult to gauge how players are performing until the pads come on, but new quarterback Joe Milton said to heck with that line of thinking.
On one of his first reps under center, Milton fired a 40-yard laser to Jalen Brooks on a play-action sequence. Brooks ultimately came down with the ball out of bounds, but Milton delivered a strike. The third-year wide receiver should have been more aware of the sideline (h/t to Jon Machota of The Athletic for the clip).

Joe Milton's arm strength already on full display in Cowboys training camp
It would have taken some nifty footwork for Brooks to complete the catch in bounds, but Milton's pass deserved at least an attempt at an acrobatic catch. We'll chalk that up to offseason rust.
Milton has one of the strongest arms in the NFL. He has a better arm than Dak Prescott and several other upper-echelon quarterbacks. He barely stepped into this throw (he was drafting to his left as he released) and launched it 40 yards right into Brooks' breadbasket.

This sequence encapsulates why the Cowboys went out and traded for Milton. He will surely have several lowlights throughout camp. His accuracy was hit or miss in college and his timing, footwork and overall touch on throws between the hashes need a lot of coaching.
Cowboys fans will get the full "Joe Milton experience" in Oxnard, but one thing he isn't lacking - on top of his freakishly powerful right arm - is confidence. When all is said and done, that could be what separates Milton from Trey Lance, who had all the physical tools to succeed, but never quite rediscovered his confidence after he was traded from the 49ers.
Regardless, the 25-year-old Milton could not have scripted a better start to camp. He's going to be one of the most talked about players in Oxnard.
