Former All-Pro makes Cowboys' Christian Parker sound like a dream come true

Dallas' young leader has made a good impression everywhere.

On paper, Christian Parker looks like just what the Dallas Cowboys need. Secondary success has followed him at every NFL stop, and Brian Schottenheimer's team needs a kick in the behind from that standpoint. But one can often miss nuance or important details when looking at things on paper.

Coaching an entire defensive unit is a lot different than leading a position group or even coordinating the pass game. It requires knowing everyone's role, marrying run and pass scheme and having the conviction to call the right defense, knowing the onus is on you, while leading an entire half of the ball.

And until he actually sets foot on the sideline in a regular-season game with the call sheet and headset on, for as much hype as there is around Dallas' young leader, Cowboys fans may have a twinge of doubt in their mind about how exactly things will go for Parker.

Former All-Pro Justin Simmons recently spoke about Parker, though, and it sounds like America's team may be getting exactly what it needed.

Justin Simmons' Christian Parker comments should have Dallas Cowboys fans excited

Simmons, after retiring earlier this offseason, spoke with NFL insider Jordan Schultz about Parker, his defensive backs coach for three years with the Denver Broncos from 2021 to 2023. Simmons, a four-time All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler, doesn't have any qualms about Parker taking the next step.

"Denver, even though we weren't winning games, our secondary play would have been up there with some of the best," Simmons said. "He goes to Philly, they win a Super Bowl. Their secondary play is up there for some of the best, right? And then now he has a chance to go be a DC. Dallas should be excited, man. He's one of the best coaches I've had."

During Parker's years in Denver, the Broncos' offense was putrid. There was only so much that the defense could do. But Parker has seemingly made a habit out of getting the most out of his group and, as Simmons put it, having that unit be "up there with the best."

Now that Parker is in charge of the entire defense in Dallas, fans can't help but think about the possibility of the Cowboys' defense somehow being "up there with the best" in 2026. That would, of course, be one of the biggest 180s that an NFL team has ever made.

Nobody is even expecting that, though. Somewhere around the league average would be just fine and plenty good enough for Dallas and its elite offense to have serious success this coming season. But fans are holding out hope that Parker can make this unit one of the best almost overnight.

It is also important to note that Simmons declared Parker one of the best coaches he has ever had. Justin Simmons has played for some very good coaches in his NFL career, like Sean Payton, Gary Kubiak, Wade Phillips, Raheem Morris, Vance Joseph, Vic Fangio, and Brandon Staley.

That is some high praise, then.

All the Cowboys really need is for Parker to prevent this unit from being a disaster. But if he's the coach that Simmons bills him up to be, and if he can have the effect he's seemingly had elsewhere, then Parker will be a godsend in Dallas.
