As far as the wide receiver position goes, the Dallas Cowboys are pretty fortunate. They have the best receiver duo in the NFL in CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens and a quality WR3 in Ryan Flournoy, but training camp has also exposed that they have more depth at the position than we even realize.
However, one of the Cowboys' division rivals is nowhere near as lucky: the Washington Commanders, who are in dire straits after Deebo Samuel went back to San Francisco.
The Commanders were thin at wideout as is. Their incumbent No. 1, Terry McLaurin, is coming off an injury-riddled season, and the only source of depth behind him now that Samuel is gone is a pair of third-round picks: Luke McCaffrey and rookie Antonio Williams.
Now that Deebo is back on the opposite coast, the Commanders' WR woes may push them right into the arms of the polarizing Stefon Diggs, who is still a free agent after surpassing 1,000 receiving yards in New England a season ago.
Here's the latest from ESPN Commanders insider John Keim:
"Right now, I think there is only one guy that Washington would sign, and that's Stefon Diggs. I would say they continue to monitor that situation. If you're monitoring it, it means you're in the know. We know he wants to play here. And we know Washington needs another receiver."
Cowboys shouldn't lose sleep if Commanders sign Stefon Diggs to replace Deebo Samuel
The rumors about the four-time Pro Bowler heading to our nation's capital have heated up all summer long, but the Samuel news essentially poured a gallon of gasoline on it, because the Commanders badly need to add additional veteran experience to their receiver room before the season starts.
The talent is nothing to question, but there's a reason Diggs is still sitting in free agency in August: he's one of the most polarizing receivers in the NFL. Not only is he known to be a bit of a diva, he's dealt with some legal troubles after being accused of strangulation and assault by his personal chef.
The 32-year-old can still be a quality pass-catcher in this league, but some red flags have teams wary of signing him. But at this point, what other choice do the Commanders have? Unless they want to part with more assets and trade for someone, Diggs may truly be their best bet. That's an unenviable position to be in.
Right now, Washington is backed into a much tighter corner then they should be, and their only way out is far from ideal. Without Deebo Samuel, their WR room doesn't hold a candle to the Cowboys', and even if they get pressured into bringing Stefon Diggs back to the DMV, that wouldn't change.
