One of the biggest myths in the NFL is that the Dallas Cowboys have a weak receiver room behind CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. When you have the best receiver duo in the league, your pass game can get away with not offering much involvement to the WR who sits third on the depth chart,
For some reason, the Cowboys are being urged to sign Stefon Diggs, who is still a free agent. But the receiver room already has enough diva-like personalities given the Pickens contract saga, and all Diggs would do is make Brian Schottenheimer need to take an extra Advil every morning.
Jerry Jones has done a good job not creating any extra headaches for Dallas this offseason, and signing Diggs would be a major step in the wrong direction. But the Cowboys are the Cowboys, so of course they're being urged to make the flashy name-value signing when they have no reason to.
Stefon Diggs would throw a wrench into all of the Dallas Cowboys' progress
While going over 61 predictions for the 2026 NFL season, SB Nation's Jarrett Bailey's first prediction was that Jerry Jones will bring the veteran wideout to the Lone Star State. But does one of the league's top passing offenses need to complicate things by bringing in Stefon Diggs? I think not.
"Outside of stars CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, Dallas has zero depth at receiver," Bailey wrote... Â "Signing Diggs as a chess piece who can move around both on the perimeter and the slot, just like Lamb and Pickens can do, would give the Cowboys the best trio of pass-catchers in the NFL."
While Bailey is correct in his assessment that the 32-year-old would make the offense more fun, he seems to have forgotten that the Cowboys already have a quality WR3 in Ryan Flournoy-- and there really isn't much of a reason for Dallas to spend money on a wideout who will eat into his snap share.
Flournoy burst onto the scene at the end of the last season, and as one of the team's better deep threats, he's primed for a real breakout in 2026. And at a fraction of the price of Diggs, the Cowboys have absolutely no reason to sign such a WR to take his job -- especially one dealing with legal issues.
There's no doubt that despite the headaches he will provide you, Stefon Diggs can still do a quality job at the wide receiver position. He's coming off a 1,000-yard season as a WR1 in New England. But let someone else deal with that headache and just run it back with the receiver room you have.
The Cowboys already have three good wide receivers, so like Bailey mentioned, they are better suited to ignore this buzz and allow the Washington Commanders to have him.
