Cowboys just got the Shavon Revel Jr. update they needed most

Good news from Dallas!

Shavon Revel Jr. was a big, long, fast and fluid athlete coming out of East Carolina. That's why many felt that he'd be a borderline first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, even though he was coming off an ACL tear. The Dallas Cowboys lucked out when he fell to Round 3, and they snapped him up quickly.

Jerry Jones and Brian Schottenheimer clearly felt confident that, even if Revel Jr. had to effectively redshirt his rookie year, the Cowboys got a potentially special player in an ever-thinning secondary. But the results from his rookie year, albeit in a small sample size, were mixed, to put it nicely.

He ended up playing seven games for Dallas, but didn't look anything like the player Cowboys fans thought he'd be. Revel Jr. made a few plays on the ball, as expected, but gave up way too much in coverage, and missed tackles were a recurring and unfortunate issue for the youngster.

But the tide seems to be turning this offseason at OTAs.

Shavon Revel Jr. feeling and looking healthy is what Dallas Cowboys badly needed

Revel Jr. is now, by all accounts, fully healthy as Dallas enters the crux of its offseason program. With the 2025 third-rounder battling for a starting spot with Cobie Durant and promising rookie Devin Moore, Revel Jr. needed to get out to a hot start.

Cowboys reporter Nick Harris claims that he has.

"Shavon Revel Jr. was on the practice field donning a new number (28) and no longer with a brace on his left leg," Harris noted. "Looked more fluid in his movement as a result and has gained a lot of confidence this offseason now that he's returning to 100-percent."

Not only is Revel Jr. back in the uniform number in which he played his best football as a Pirate at East Carolina, but he is back looking like himself, apparently. That is undoubtedly the update that the Cowboys wanted from the second-year player as he enters a pivotal stretch in his career.

To add more oomph to his previous statement, Harris also reported that, through his personal conversation with Revel Jr. at OTAs, he feels that the young boundary corner is getting back to the headspace that he was in college, when he shined as a cover man.

"Had a good 10-minute conversation with him in the locker room yesterday. Confidence is building back up, he’s trusting his body, and he’s itching to start doing some press man stuff again (likely won’t happen until pads come on in Oxnard)."

Cornerbacks that can flat-out cover in man are rare. They make a defensive coordinator's life much easier, and they are a pest for opposing wide receivers. Dallas will face no shortage of elite pass-catchers during 2026 and beyond, so Revel Jr. being "back" would be massive.

With his size, too, Revel Jr. has the ability to play in the box some and be a net positive against the run. Again, he didn't exactly show that as a rookie, but it often takes a full season or a year's time for players to start looking like themselves again post-knee surgery.

While Dallas has potential solutions opposite DaRon Bland in both Durant and Moore, Revel Jr. coming along is still a welcome development. Christian Parker loves his defensive backs, and the more the merrier for a Cowboys defense that was effectively 11 traffic cones last season.
