Cowboys' Christian Parker hype reaches pinnacle before he ever calls a play

How about that?

It cannot be overstated just how badly the Dallas Cowboys need Christian Parker to live up to his billing. Now, that doesn't mean pressure needs to be heaped onto the first-year DC, but Brian Schottenheimer has the offense playing at a playoff level. Parker just needs his unit to be average.

But just because someone learned from great defensive minds like Vic Fangio, Vance Joseph, Mike Pettine and Ejiro Evero does not mean that they can stand on their own two feet and apply that knowledge. Schottenheimer, Jerry Jones and the fanbase seem confident he can, though.

And as a result of that belief, the buzz around the rookie defensive play-caller has been quite palpable in Dallas. Before he ever gets a chance to use a playsheet at the NFL level for the first time, though, the hype surrounding Parker is reaching its pinnacle.

SI predicts Dallas Cowboys DC Christian Parker to be in running for Assistant Coach of the Year

Sports Illustrated's Connor Orr made 100 bold predictions for the 2026 NFL season, and of course, several of them concerned America's Team. This one about Parker, in particular, should catch the attention of Cowboys fans, as big things are already being talked about for the young coach.

"Declan Doyle and Christian Parker will be finalists for Assistant Coach of the Year

"Parker, the new Cowboys defensive coordinator, and Doyle, the new Ravens offensive coordinator, will be taking on major roles with quality teams that underperformed significantly in 2025. Parker, reviving a Cowboys defense that now has more than half the unit occupied by new starters (including the universally loved first-rounder Caleb Downs), is a likely candidate to achieve an overall performance upgrade worthy of award consideration."

For Parker, a performance upgrade for the Dallas defense in 2026 will be quite easy and the exact opposite of what Ricky Bobby's father taught him in Talladega Nights: Just don't be last. After finishing with the NFL's worst defense a year ago, anything but the bottom of the barrel will be better.

That said, the Cowboys and their fans don't have their sights set on being merely No. 31 or anything close to it. Approaching league average would be a good goal and likely productive enough to let Schottenheimer's offense win games. Even around No. 20 should be plenty to make the playoffs.

Parker could easily surprise folks and have this revamped defense playing much better than most think. Are there still questions at linebacker and on the edge? Absolutely. But who is to say that Parker can't get the most out of these players and have these groups be better than the sum of their parts?

The last time that a Cowboys assistant won this award was in 2021, when Dan Quinn did it in his first year as the defensive coordinator in Dallas. Parker has a chance to repeat history, then, and like Quinn, would easily be on the short list to take an NFL head job if he ascends this quickly.

Now, Quinn did stay with the Cowboys for two more years after earning this honor, but he was at a different phase of his coaching career than Parker. Everyone wants the bright up-and-comer, and if Parker wins this award, then he'll easily be tabbed as that.

Before we get too ahead of ourselves, though, let's just bask in the glory of Parker getting those around the league excited before he even puts on the headset. While not placing too high expectations on him, Dallas fans may have a special young leader on their hands.
