Tress Way – Punter, Dustin Hopkins – Kicker, Ron Rivera – Head Coach

As punters go, one thing you can say for Way is that he sure got a lot of practice in 2019. Way’s 79 punts led the division and tied him for fifth-most in the entire league.

He was also quite proficient with his net punting average, finishing third-best in the league at 44.1 and tied for seventh-best at sticking opponents inside their own 20-yard line. Unfortunately, when opposing teams did return his punts, they did so quite well. Only five other punters in the league had more return yards of their punts than Way’s 9.1 yards per punt.

Hopkins, meanwhile, is perfectly average. His field goal make percentage of 83.3% was good enough for 15th overall in 2019. He missed one kick each from inside of 20 yards, 20-29 yards, 30-39 yards, and 50+ yards. Essentially, he did exactly what you would expect, without being exceptional in any particular way.

The hiring of Rivera is certainly a step in the right direction for what seems to be a rudderless franchise. His successes seem to overshadow his failures though, which is not exactly a gleaming endorsement of his abilities. For every 15-1, 12-4, or 11-5 season, Rivera has a couple of 6-10 seasons along with a final season of 5-7. Rivera did take Carolina to one Super Bowl which, for Washington, seems like forever ago since they could say the same.
