Dallas Cowboys

Chris Jones – Punter, Kai Forbath / Greg Zuerlein – Kicker, Mike McCarthy – Head Coach

Look, there is no way to sugar coat how dismal last year was for the Dallas Cowboys and their special teams. It’s been a point of contention for a while, but in 2019, things bubbled over into ridiculousness.

Jones was comically bad as a punter last year. His net punting average of just 37 yards per punt was not only the worst in football but ten yards per punt worse than the best guy. Ten. Yards. Only two guys did worse at pinning opponents inside their own 20 than did Jones. One of those had half as many attempts as Jones did. Hopefully, this was an anomaly, but don’t be shocked if Jones is replaced during training camp.

As for the kickers, former kicker Brett Maher was somehow allowed to keep his job all the way until early December, despite being the least accurate kicker in the league. Once he was finally replaced, Forbath came in and was a perfect 10 for 10 in both field goals and extra points.

For his service, he is now in a kicking battle with Zuerlein, the long-time Ram. This is mostly due to new special teams coach John Fassel also coming from the Rams. That, in of itself, is a major upgrade.

Of course, the coaching move most Cowboys fans are excited about is the exodus of Garrett for Mike McCarthy. McCarthy brings with him 125 regular-season wins, 10 playoff wins, and a Super Bowl ring. With a loaded offense, it’s hard not to envision this team going places it hasn’t in over two decades.
