Position of Need: Safety

For years, fans have been clamoring for the Cowboys to make a move to improve their overall talent-level at safety. After a failed attempt to acquire All-Pro safety Earl Thomas for a third-round pick during the 2018 NFL Draft, Dallas has all but given up on trying to enhance the position.

During the 2019 draft, the Cowboys had an opportunity to draft one of three top safeties with their second-round selection. Delaware’s Nasir Adderley, Washington’s Taylor Rapp, and Virginia’s Juan Thornhill were all available when Dallas’ number was called 58th overall.

The Cowboys elected to draft UCF defensive tackle Trysten Hill instead. Subsequently, Hill was a healthy scratch to start the season. He’s recorded one tackle in three-game appearances. Adderley, Rapp, and Thornhill were all drafted by the 63rd overall pick.

Of the three, Thornhill has emerged as the best of the safety trio so far starting every game for the Kansas City Chiefs and recording 22 tackles, two pass defends, and an interception in six contests.

As for the Cowboys, they’ve elected to stick with the starting combo of Xavier Woods and Jeff Heath. Neither player has been able to come up with an interception yet this season. Woods, who has forced one fumble, is third on the team with 38 total tackles. Heath is right behind him with 30.

The Cowboys keep promising that this duo, specifically Woods, can be really good in this league. As the entire Dallas’ defense has regressed this season, we beg to differ. This would be a great time to trade for a ball-hawking, playmaker at the safety position to help spark this lifeless defensive unit. But we’re not holding our breath.
