Position of Need: Swing Tackle

Cowboys fans got a glimpse of what the world would be like without offensive tackles Tyron Smith and La’el Collins on the line. And it wasn’t pretty as quarterback Dak Prescott played the majority of the last Sunday’s loss to the Jets on his backside.

Securing quality depth at the offensive tackle position is a clear need the Cowboys must address. And the sooner the better. Cameron Fleming has been far too inconsistent in Dallas to be relied upon without repeated help to his side. Brandon Knight is a 22-year old undrafted rookie and needs more time to develop. In the meantime, Prescott is racking up the hits. And the Cowboys’ brass can no longer afford to ignore the problem.

The Cowboys could use a veteran presence at the position that will provide some stability and who is able to spot start as Tyron Smith, who is now into his ninth season as a professional, continues to rack up injuries and miss games.

This move could just be a one-season stop-gap for the Cowboys as the presence of 2019 third-rounder Connor McGovern could move Connor Williams, a 2018 second-rounder, from starting left guard to swing tackle next offseason.

For some reason, Dallas seems unwilling to make that switch now despite Williams having suitable replacements in Joe Looney and Xavier Su’a-Filo on the depth chart, both of whom played significant snaps in 2018.
