Sell: The Cowboys still need a safety

This is a narrative I believe truly died following the draft. The Cowboys unwillingness to overpay for All-Pro safety Earl Thomas in free agency proved this team doesn’t feel desperation towards their safety position. And the fact they opted to draft defensive tackle Trysten Hill in the second round over some of the top safety prospects only cemented those beliefs.

The Cowboys honestly believe that can field an elite defense with safeties Xavier Woods and Jeff Heath as their starters in the secondary. They trust both of them and believe each can get the job done in 2019.

Dallas did sign veteran George Iloka in free agency and drafted Texas A&M’s Donovan Wilson in the sixth round. Both are expected to compete for roster spots at safety this summer. The Cowboys also meet with five-time Pro Bowler Eric Berry earlier this offseason, but the injury-plagued 30-year old left Dallas without a deal and is still on the market.

There has been some speculation that Berry could be looking to sign right before training camp. Although the Cowboys seemed to have interest in him at one point, his asking price may be too high for a bargain-bin shopping front office. And Berry’s worrisome health concerns make him a major risk.

Still, the Cowboys seem more than willing to enter the upcoming season with the current safeties on their roster. And that’s why I’m selling this narrative.
