Buy or sell? Judging 6 Dallas Cowboys training camp narratives
Buy: Last chance for Taco Charlton
A former first-round selection is expected to produce right out of the gate. But the Cowboys knew Michigan defensive end Taco Charlton was a project when they drafted him 28th overall two years ago. Dallas even had a second-round grade on Charlton and knew it would take time for his play to match his draft status.
Fast forward two seasons later and Charlton now appears to be in a make-or-break situation in Dallas. After posting a strong offseason last year, a shoulder-injury hindered the 24-year-old from taking another step in his development. And being a healthy scratch at one point last season was a warning shot across his bow.
Facing more competition than ever, being a former first-rounder will no longer grant Charlton automatic passage to the final 53-man roster in Dallas. The third-year defender will need to earn his snaps, opportunities, and spot on the depth chart this summer.
Although Charlton still has another season left on his rookie deal, and a potential fifth-year option the team could pick up, the Cowboys’ coaching staff might figure Taco is a lost cause three years in. So I’m absolutely buying the narrative that this could be the last hurrah for Taco Charlton in Dallas.
Those are six training camp narratives that we are either buying or selling as the Dallas Cowboys kick-off training camp this weekend. But what do you think? What narrative are you not buying as the Cowboys enter camp? Let us know in the comment section below.
