Longtime NFL writer Peter King believes the Dallas Cowboys adding this free agent at quarterback could help Dak Prescott improve.

The Dallas Cowboys believe they have their future secured under center in quarterback Dak Prescott. The fourth round selection played so well during his rookie campaign, he essentially dethroned longtime starting quarterback Tony Romo in Dallas. That belief will be confirmed if or when the Cowboys move on from Romo this offseason.

Currently sitting behind Prescott on the depth chart is only Romo, as both back-up quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Kellen Moore are free agents. Although it is believed the Cowboys will re-sign one of them, Dallas is also expected to add another quarterback via the NFL Draft or free agency.

One longtime NFL writer believes it should be the latter. And he believes one specific free agent makes the most sense as a possible mentor for Prescott.

"“I think if you let Tony Romo go, Jerry Jones, you’ll have a few backup options, to be sure,” wrote longtime NFL writer Peter King on The MMQB on Monday. “The one call I’d absolutely, positively make would be to Josh McCown. Make him your number three, de-activate him most weeks (if not all), and watch him help Dak Prescott get better, and watch him do it without a shred of ego.”"

Prior to signing Sanchez last season, the Cowboys were reportedly interested in acquiring McCown from the Cleveland Browns. But the alleged asking price of a future fourth round draft pick or higher was too steep.

Now that McCown is a free agent, the native of Jacksonville, Texas seems like a no-brainer add for the Cowboys this offseason. The soon-to-be 38-year old would essentially be another quarterback coach, giving a young Prescott yet another experienced ear to tug on.

If pressed to play, McCown has had past success in a back-up role. Most notably with the Chicago Bears back in 2013. During that season, McCown passed for 1,829 yards, 13 touchdowns and one interception. He started in five games that year, winning three of those contests.
