The Dallas Cowboys witnessed the fall from grace that cornerback Trevon Diggs underwent. Just a few years removed from leading the NFL with an absurd 11 interceptions, Diggs was cut loose in 2025 and failed to latch on with another team on any sort of long-term contract after an exceedingly brief trial period alongside Micah Parsons on the Green Bay Packers.
Both Diggs brothers remained unsigned at this point, but Trevon may be the player less likely to sign immediately. ESPN's latest projection, however, has Diggs making a shock return to the NFC East.
ESPN's Matt Bowen has the former Cowboys star landing with the Washington Commanders, who may need one or two more impact pieces in the secondary after choosing a linebacker in Sonny Styles with their No. 7 pick in the NFL Draft.
ESPN believes Commanders should sign ex-Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs
This could be one step below sabotage for a Commanders team fresh off riding the Marshon Lattimore roller coaster. Not only are the Cowboys free of the restraints Diggs placed on them, but they could relish those same limitations as they limit the ceiling of a division rival eyeing a bounce-back season.
Diggs' gambling styles may produce turnovers, but he also produced just about the worst season a cornerback in his position could provide. Diggs graded out as one of the worst corners in the league last year, and Dallas' refusal to change anything about their scheme is what really sealed his fate.
Signing Diggs in 2026 would be like signing Odell Beckham Jr. after injuries brought an end to his prime. His name carries some weight, but Washington might get a crash course in just how poor the former second-round pick has become now that attrition has started to take its toll on him physically.
The Commanders not only need some cornerbacks as bad as any contender in the NFC due to the aforementioned Lattimore regression and a lack of depth, but they have been willing to take swings in the past on players with big names and little remaining game, like Von Miller and Deebo Samuel.
Dan Quinn and the Washington front office might get lured in by what Diggs was as opposed to what he is.
Watching the Commanders sign Diggs with the goal of getting that second-year All-Pro season out of him might be hilarious for Cowboys fans to watch, and it would all but solidify the notion that Diggs is not what he once was. Better the Commanders learn that lesson than the Cowboys.
