The Dallas Cowboys selection of Mazi Smith initially wasn't well received. Once fans gave the pick time to breath, however, the trepidation quickly turned to positivity. It also helped that the reigning champion Chiefs called Dallas about moving up to No. 26 overall to draft Smith.

The Cowboys could've gone a different direction -- like edge rusher Nolan Smith or cornerback Joey Porter Jr. -- who were taken shortly after the Michigan defender -- but this team has overlooked the nose tackle position in the draft for far too long.

Long story short, Dallas needed to get better in the trenches. They're not going anywhere in the playoffs if they can't stop the run -- where they struggled mightily last year-- and Smith will pay massive dividends in that regard.

It might take Smith taking the field for skeptical fans to warm up to the pick. If you needed a reason to jump on the Mazi bandwagon, the first-rounder's legendary quote after his first glance at the Cowboys' Lombardi Trophies and Super Bowl rings should do the trick.

Oh yeah, we're head over heels and rookie minicamp hasn't even started.

By the time training camp rolls around our No. 58 Mazi Smith jerseys will be multiple months old. Smith's hunger to get on the field -- and help steer the Cowboys to their first Super Bowl since 1995 -- are tangible. For context, Smith wasn't born until six years after Dallas' last world championship in 2021.

On top of gulping up running backs at and behind the line of scrimmage, Smith has a knack for delivering the goods behind the mic. Here's what the 21-year-old tackle said when he was asked what the Cowboys are getting in him.

"Dawg. Big dawg. Big fella. Big physical guy. Never been afraid of contact… A guy that's going to get into somebody's face. A guy who ain't going to make it easy."

If there's one thing Cowboys fans need to know about Smith -- other than his frightening athleticism -- it's his affinity for getting physical at the point of attack. Having played football since he was a kid, Smith just wants to hit somebody.

"I love the physicality man," Smith said, via Cowboys.com. "Football has been taking care of me my whole life. I've been playing since I was seven… So, I don't know what I would do if I couldn't put that helmet on to hit somebody. That's just my nature [and] in my blood.

"It's just something that I feel I was designed to do and forever thankful to God that I got this opportunity."

The Cowboys got a good one in Smith, both on and off the field.
