Cowboys-Giants weather forecast is terrible news for America's Team
By Jerry Trotta
The Dallas Cowboys are currently third in the NFC East with a 1-2 record. With games upcoming against the 3-0 Steelers and the NFC-contending Lions and 49ers, their matchup against the New York Giant on Thursday Night Football is a must-win.
Luckily, the Giants have been a get-right opponent for Dallas over the years. The Cowboys hold a 10-game winning streak over their rivals. Their last lost to New York came in Dak Prescott's rookie season in 2016. It hasn't been much of a rivalry for nearly a decade.
Having said that, the Cowboy have lost back-to-back games and players have been very critical of one another's performance and attention to detail. With tempers flaring and pressure mounting, a short week could be just what the doctor ordered.
Getting away from AT&T Stadium could be a blessing in disguise as well. Well, maybe. The weather forecast for Thursday night could spell trouble for Dallas.
Cowboys-Giants weather forecast is not ideal for Dallas
Thursday night's forecast calls for rain showers, per NFL Weather. That, of course, is subject to change, but as of this writing there is a slight chain of rain for all four quarters.
It's duly noted that if the Cowboys can't beat the Giants during a rain shower, they have bigger problems to worry about. With that said, rain is not the ideal playing condition for this team.
The Cowboys' only strength on offense right now is Dak Prescott. CeeDee Lamb is coming off a brutal (and embarrassing) display in Week 3, but Prescott to Lamb is the best thing the offense has going for it - maybe the only thing. Rain might make it difficult for Prescott to put Dallas on his shoulders.
We all know that Mike McCarthy loves to establish the run. Even with Dallas trailing big against the Ravens last week, McCarthy still called runs on first down for Ezekiel Elliott and Deuce Vaughn. Rain could call for a bigger commitment to the rushing attack, which is arguably the worst in the NFL.
Among 51 running backs, Elliott is one of four through three games who has yet to register a gain of 10 or more yards. In addition, the Cowboys are the only team in the league that doesn't have a running back (or QB) with a run of more than 10 yards. Rico Dowdle has one 10-yard run.
Both Elliott and Dowdle are bottom-10 in rushing yards over expected, per Next Gen Stats. The offensive line deserves to wear some of that. The continuity is not where it needs to be.
Again, the Cowboys should beat the Giants regardless of the weather. The potential unfriendly conditions could be a nice preview of what's to come in December and January, so this could be a good opportunity for Dallas to get the running game back on track.
