Cowboys final 53-man roster prediction after preseason
• Cowboys go four deep at WR
• Which CB is left out?
By Randy Gurzi
Tight End(3):
Jake Ferguson
Luke Schoonmaker
Peyton Hendershot
Dallas was likely to take four tight end into the regular season but then undrafted rookie John Stephen, Jr. tore his ACL. He was having a fantastic camp, catching everything that came his way.
With Stephens sidelined, the Cowboys elect to keep just three tight ends and go deep elsewhere. With Dalton Schultz now in Houston, Jake Ferguson takes over as the starter. He's done well this offseason but could be pushed by rookie Luke Schoonmaker.
Peyton Hendershot is the third option and he's primarily a receiving threat. He was quiet in the preseason but proved last year he can deliver when called upon.
Offensive Line (9):
Tyron Smith
Tyler Smith
Tyler Biadasz
Zack Martin
Terence Steele
Asim Richards
Matt Farniok
Matt Waletzko
Josh Ball
The starting offensive linemen are very impressive for the Cowboys — but they have their question marks. Tyron Smith and Terence Steele are excellent on the edges but Smith is constantly injured and Steele is coming off an injury of his own.
Along the interior, they have one of the best guards in the game in Zack Martin with Tyler Smith playing opposite him. Dallas has Smith penciled in as their left tackle of the future but he again stays at guard due to necessity. Tyler Biadasz is the center, and he's quietly developed into a solid starter.
On the bench, they suffered a blow when Chuma Edoga was injured. That leaves Matt Waletzko and Josh Ball as the backup tackles, but Ball can play guard as well which saves him (they might also need to go with another option should Ball be out for a significant amount of time following an injury against the Raiders). Matt Farniok and Asim Richards are there to back up the interior — with Farniok able to serve as the No. 2 center as well as a reserve guard.
