The Dallas Cowboys' defensive coaching staff is starting to take shape. Days after officially hiring Mike Zimmer as their defensive coordinator, the Cowboys hired Paul Guenther as their defense's run-game coordinator. This hire should excite fans as Guenther is a longtime trusted assistant of Zimmer's.

Additionally, the team hired Jeff Zgonina as its defensive line coach. Zgonina replaces the vacancy left by Aden Durde, who is now the Seahawks defensive coordinator. Joining Zgonina coaching Micah Parsons and Co. is former first-round pick Greg Ellis, who will be Dallas' assistant defensive line coach.

The pieces are indeed starting to come together. If our math is correct, the Cowboys just need to name a defensive passing game coordinator to replace Joe Whitt Jr. Hiring Steve Wilks for that role would complete an awesome set of hires.

While Guenther might be the most accomplished of Zimmer's newest assistants, it was Zgonina who has fans buzzing on social media. Basically, Cowboys Nation is in disbelief at Zgonina's physique. The 53-year-old genuinely looks like he could compete for the World's Strongest Man.

Cowboys fans can't believe how jacked new assistant DL coach Jeff Zgonina is

What an absolute unit. It's no wonder Zgonina's playing career as a defensive tackle lasted 17 seasons.

In all seriousness, Zgonina has a strong track record as a coach. He comes over from Washington, where he served as defensive line coach for the last two seasons. Before that, he was the 49ers defensive line coach from 2017-19.

He's worked under multiple accomplished defensive coordinators, including Super Bowl champ Steve Spagnuolo, former Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips, current Jets head coach Robert Saleh and longtime NFL head coach Jack Del Rio.

If you want a little look into the kind of energy Zgonina brings, here he is yelling "Bring the hammer" during a defensive line drill at Commanders practice.

Zgonina was in Washington when its defensive line carried it to the playoffs in 2020. You might remember the-then Football Team winning the NFC East with a 7-9 record and pushing the Super Bowl champion Buccaneers to the brink of an upset in the wild card round. Zgonina was not only present for that run, but he was a catalyst.

Time will tell if Zgonina was a strong hire, but his resume speaks for itself. Not that physique factors into good coaching, but it's pretty comical how quick it circulated on Cowboys Twitter that Zgonina is a mountain of a man.
