The Dallas Cowboys are entrenched in a contract negotiation with a superstar, so naturally Jerry Jones poured gasoline on the fire with a tone-deaf comment. Jones set social media ablaze on Thursday when he said there is no "sense of urgency" to sign CeeDee Lamb before the end of training camp. Lamb responded by calling out the owner and there is now widespread panic among fans.

Jones is no stranger to wearing the arrogant hat amid a high-profile contract dispute. Cowboys fans may remember Jones' "Zeke who" comment when Ezekiel Elliott staged a holdout in 2019. No more than three weeks later, Jones made Elliott the highest-paid running back in NFL history.

Jones' comment nor Elliott's holdout stained their relationship. The two remain extremely close, but it's fair to question if alienating Lamb is good for business. Spoiler: It's not. It sends a terrible message to the team's other All-Pros (cough cough Micah Parsons, who retweeted Lamb's response to Jones ) that they too are going to have to scratch and claw to get their deal.

As it turns out, two can play at that game, Mr. Jones. In light of Thursday's firestorm, Lamb removed "America's Team" from his social media profile. He also changed his background photo to a snapshot of him and former Oklahoma teammate and current Chiefs receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown.

Cowboys WR CeeDee lamb teases Chiefs trade after spat with Jerry Jones

It's not the Eagles, 49ers or Packers, but Lamb ending up on the Chiefs would be the next-worst outcome. Kansas City is already a dynasty in the making. Lamb teaming up with Patrick Mahomes would make them virtually unbeatable. It would almost guarantee that Lamb wins a Super Bowl in the next two years.

Luckily for Cowboys fans, the Chiefs likely wouldn't offer Lamb a worthwhile contract or even surrender the necessary trade capital to acquire him. They already traded away the game's best wide receiver in Tyreek Hill just as the market for him got too rich. Why would KC trade for Lamb when he will almost assuredly surpass Hill's $30 million AAV? Recent history tells us they won't even consider it.

The Chiefs don't have an elite WR room by any stretch, but they won two consecutive Super Bowls after they traded away Hill. That is the Patrick Mahomes effect. The draft capital acquired from the Hill trade helped Brett Veach put the finishing touches on building an elite defense.

As long as Travis Kelce is still effective, Mahomes only needs a middling group of receivers. On paper, Rashee Rice, Hollywood Brown, Xavier Worthy and Mecole Hardman is more than enough talent for Mahomes to reach the mountaintop.

While Jones' comment likely irked Lamb with his comment, there is no evidence to suggest that No. 88 wants to reunite with Brown in Arrowhead. Given the game Jones is playing through the media, Cowboys fans can't fault Lamb for firing back in his own cryptic way, as distressing as it is.
