Cowboys' Brandon Aubrey is outscoring some of the biggest fantasy football superstars
By Luke Norris
Let's be honest here. Nobody wants to be the first person to take a kicker in a fantasy football draft. That said, however, if you took that leap and got the opportunity to take Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey, it's paid off for you.
It's more so in standard leagues than in PPR or half-PPR leagues, but, nevertheless, the second-year stud is racking up points for everyone who has him.
In fact, he's amassed so many points through the first four weeks of the season that he's recorded more than many, many high-profile players, including several QB1s and WR1s that many bank on to get victories.
For instance, take Aubrey's own Cowboys teammate, CeeDee Lamb, who likely went in the top five of any draft you were in ahead of this 2024 NFL season. Per FantasyPros, Lamb, who has 20 catches for 316 yards and two touchdowns, as well as 33 additional yards on the ground, ranked 61st among all players (DSTs included, of course) at the conclusion of Week 4 with 44.9 points.
Aubrey, meanwhile, ranked 27th with 60.0 points. Yes, you read that correctly. A kicker ranks 27th in fantasy football points through four weeks in standard leagues. But that's what happens when you've gone 5-for-5 from 40-49 yards and 6-for-7 from 50-plus, including two of 60 or longer.
The fact that folks went wild when he actually missed from 51 yards against the New York Giants speaks to his ability, as that was the first time in his career that he'd failed to drain a kick from 50 or longer.
So, who else besides Lamb has Aubrey outscored thus far? Let's have a look.
Cowboys' Brandon Aubrey ranks higher in fantasy football than many All-Pro-caliber players
As mentioned, in standard leagues, Aubrey ranks 27th in scoring through four weeks with 60.0 points. To put that into perspective, Patrick Mahomes, who has the Kansas City Chiefs off to a 4-0 start and is typically one of the first QBs taken in a fantasy football draft, is barely ahead of the Cowboys' kicker at 61.5.
As for who's directly below Aubrey at No. 28? That would be superstar wideout Justin Jefferson, who's gotten off to a strong start for the undefeated Minnesota Vikings with 20 catches for 358 yards and four touchdowns in four games. But even all that isn't enough, as he falls just short at 59.8 points.
The next five on the list? How about big names like Deshaun Watson, four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, James Cook, Malik Nabers, and Aaron Jones?
But the list doesn't end there. Take a look at a few more names who you likely wish were getting you more points at this juncture. Do note that this was before Thursday night's matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as Kirk Cousins has jumped ahead for now following his 509-yard, four-touchdown performance.
Rank | Player | Position | Team | FF Points |
---|---|---|---|---|
27 | Brandon Aubrey | K | Dallas Cowboys | 60.0 |
42 | J.K. Dobbins | RB | LA Chargers | 50.6 |
43 | Chris Godwin | WR | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | 50.2 |
46 | Trevor Lawrence | QB | Jacksonville Jaguars | 49.8 |
49 | Marvin Harrison Jr. | WR | Arizona Cardinals | 48.3 |
50 | Ja'Marr Chase | WR | Cincinnati Bengals | 48.0 |
52 | De'Von Achane | RB | Miami Dolphins | 47.2 |
53 | Breece Hall | RB | New York Jets | 46.8 |
54 | DK Metcalf | WR | Seattle Seahawks | 46.6 |
56 | Kirk Cousins | QB | Atlanta Falcons | 46.4 |
64 | Stefon Diggs | WR | Houston Texans | 43.0 |
68 | Justin Herbert | QB | LA Chargers | 42.5 |
72 | Amon-Ra St. Brown | WR | Detroit Lions | 41.5 |
74 | Matthew Stafford | QB | LA Rams | 41.0 |
Trust me; I could keep going.
Now, what does this all mean? Absolutely nothing, of course. Well, unless you've got some big bucks riding on your league, that is.
Come season's end, Aubrey likely won't still be in the top 30, although it is worth noting that he finished 44th in standard leagues a season ago with 181.0 points, which put him ahead of guys like Brandon Aiyuk, Diggs, Chase, and Davante Adams.
So, good luck the rest of the way. As they head into their Week 5 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dallas Cowboys are going to continue to need Brandon Aubrey to win games, and you just might need him as well.
