Announcers and referees for Cowboys vs. Steelers on Sunday Night Football
By Jerry Trotta
For the second time in as many weeks, the Dallas Cowboys will play a standalone game. Coming off a narrow road win over the New York Giants last Thursday, the Cowboys will visit the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football.
This is a matchup between two of the most decorated franchises in NFL history, but neither team is close to full-strength.
The Cowboys' injury woes are well-documented. Micah Parsons won't play this week as he recovers from a high-ankle sprain and DeMarcus Lawrence is on IR with a Lisfranc injury. To add injury to insult, Brandin Cooks was added to the injury list with a knee infection that cropped up after a meniscus procedure and DaRon Bland is still on the mend following foot surgery.
Incredibly, the Steelers might have it worse than Dallas. They've already lost three starters on their offensive line to season-ending injuries and they will be without budding pass rusher Alex Highsmith this week.
Despite all of that, a Cowboys-Steelers primetime matchup is must-see television. With that in mind, here is a breakdown of who will be announcing and refereeing the game.
Announcers for Cowboys vs. Steelers
- Network: NBC
- Play-by-play: Mike Tirico
- Color commentary: Cris Collinsworth
- Sideline reporter: Melissa Stark
Cowboys fans can rest easy knowing they get a two-week break from FOX's A-team of Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady.
On Sunday night, Dallas supporters will get to hear the great Mike Tirico on play-by-play and former NFL receiver Cris Collinsworth as the color analyst. Tirico brings significantly more excitement to the broadcast booth relative to Al Michaels, who called the Thursday night game last week. Reporter Melissa Stark will have live updates from the sideline throughout the game.
Referees for Cowboys vs. Steelers
While a strong announcing crew will call the game, the head referee for Sunday's game is the polarizing Shawn Hochuli. If you thought last week's game was penalty-infested, brace yourself for an even worse display of refereeing.
Through four weeks, Hochuli's crew has called the highest-percentage of offensive penalties, per NFL Ref Stats. If you've been watching, it won't come as a surprise that the Cowboys have the second most combined false start and holding penalties of any team. Only the Texans have more.
Here is the rest of the crew that will be calling the game with Hochuli:
- Umpire: Terry Killens
- Down Judge: Patrick Holt
- Line Judge: Tim Podraza
- Side Judge: Jim Quirk
- Field Judge: Jason Ledet
- Back Judge: Jimmy Russell
