4 bold predictions for the Dallas Cowboys in 2024 season
After yet another playoff letdown and the brutally long offseason that followed, the Dallas Cowboys have a chance to wipe the slate clean and start fresh for 2024. Can this team contend for a championship after all of the losses it suffered in the offseason?
Despite an offseason of contractual question marks, we finally know that star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is going to be a Cowboy for the foreseeable future. Lamb signed a four-year, $136 million deal with the Cowboys recently, a deal that includes $100 million in guarantees and a whopping $38 million signing bonus.
While the Lamb contract is exciting, it also serves as a reminder that the Cowboys have more work to do. Specifically, they still have to get deals done with Dak Prescott and Micah Parsons, two of the best players in the league at two of the most important positions.
With lingering contract situations heading into Week 1 of the 2024 season, what can we expect from Dallas? This team will look quite a bit different this season with a new defensive coordinator (Mike Zimmer) and a lot of new personnel. It's time to make some bold predictions ahead of the new season.
1. Cowboys stars win NFL's version of the "Triple Crown"
How about this crazy (but also realistic) scenario:
- Dak Prescott wins the NFL MVP award
- CeeDee Lamb wins NFL Offensive Player of the Year
- Micah Parsons wins NFL Defensive Player of the Year
Normally if you see a bold prediction that includes players winning awards, it would be somewhat of a stretch for at least one of the individual players. But the Cowboys have an elite trio here and I think you could make legitimate arguments that each guy is the best at their respective position. Certainly, there are quarterbacks that you would take over Dak Prescott right now, but Prescott did lead the NFL in passing touchdowns last season and could absolutely win the NFL MVP award.
It's not even controversial to say CeeDee Lamb might be the best non-quarterback in the NFL right now and Micah Parsons is absolutely a Defensive MVP candidate. Maybe in 2024, these three players come away with the Triple Crown of NFL awards.
2. Mike Zimmer's defense leads the NFL in turnovers forced
Last season, the Cowboys ranked 12th in the NFL (tied with a few other teams) with 26 turnovers forced. The league leaders were Baltimore and the New York Giants, who were tied with 31 turnovers forced apiece.
My second bold prediction for the Cowboys this coming season is that they lead the NFL in total turnovers forced, which would obviously be a huge landmark for new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.
While ZImmer was the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, his teams were the 5th-best in the NFL (from 2014-2021) in turnover differential and 11th in turnovers forced defensively. He has certainly had a lot of success scheming up defenses that take the ball away from the opposition and he's got a bunch of guys who can create turnovers in Dallas.
3. Cowboys make massive in-season trade for Davante Adams
The Cowboys don't always make in-season blockbuster trades, but when they do...they prefer trades for star wide receivers.
We've seen the Cowboys make trades in the past for wide receivers Roy Williams and Amari Cooper, and I can't help but wonder if Davante Adams could be the biggest name available at the trade deadline this coming season. The Raiders could be one of the worst teams in the league and if they are, Adams is going to want out of there.
Cap space, schmap schmace. The Cowboys can figure out the financials by giving Dak Prescott a massive contract over the bye week. They need to make sure they capitalize on the current window the team is in. Getting Davante Adams to go along with CeeDee Lamb would be other-worldly.
4. Cowboys are Super Bowl champs
I've had this inkling all offseason that we're going to see the Cowboys do "more with less" in 2024. The Cowboys obviously have had some great regular season success in recent years but it hasn't translated into postseason success.
I could see that changing this year with Dallas maybe having a few more hiccups and struggles in the regular season and then turning it on and actually getting hot in the playoffs. They have all of the key ingredients to win a championship...for now.
Now is the time to get it done.
