There is no denying that the Dallas Cowboys boast two of football's best and most prolific wide receivers in CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. Both of them are certified alpha dogs, yet a question remains about which is the club's go-to guy.
Who is the play drawn up for when the Cowboys need a first down to ice the game or extend a drive? Who does quarterback Dak Prescott lean on in the red and green zones? Who do opponents prioritize slowing down when facing the two-headed monster that is Pickens and Lamb?
Does it even matter? Pickens and Lamb are both masters of their craft who need to be accounted for at all times. Defenses will be wrong, no matter what they choose, and Brian Schottenheimer and Prescott will be right, no matter who they choose.
Debate surrounding Cowboys' CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens may miss the point
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler released the 2026 rendition of his annual top-10 position rankings, and each of Dallas' star wideouts unsurprisingly made the cut. Lamb came in at No. 6, one spot ahead of his running mate.
But one anonymous coach was cited as saying teams are focused on neutralizing Pickens first and foremost.
"One NFL coordinator did not hesitate when asked which Cowboys receiver is No. 1 on opposing game plans," Fowler wrote.
"'It's Pickens,' the coordinator said. 'He has emerged.'"
Comparison is the thief of joy, as the saying goes. Why can't we have something special without just relishing the luxury? It's almost become first nature to place players into buckets or tiers and try to see where they fit in the big picture.
At the end of the day, the Lamb-versus-Pickens argument is fruitless. Choosing between them is like picking ice cream flavors: it's all about preference. There's no wrong answer here, and they're both top-flight playmakers who win in different ways and make life much easier for one another.
Lamb notably has a longer track record of success and has shown a higher ceiling. Recency bias can be a powerful force, though, as evidenced by the pendulum appearing to swing toward Pickens. Fair or not, this business is the epitome of "what have you done for me lately?"
Pickens was the more productive and efficient pass-catcher last season. Lest we forget, however, Lamb ranks third in receptions (497) and receiving yards (6,481) since earning his first of five straight Pro Bowl nods since 2021.
Keep in mind that Fowler's list isn't merely his own opinion. He "surveyed league executives, coaches and scouts," including the unnamed individual who spoke glowingly about Pickens.
Again, we're splitting hairs here, considering Lamb and Pickens are neck and neck in the receiver hierarchy. The point is that their respective greatness helps unlock the best versions of themselves, and nobody, not even the Cowboys, needs to hem themselves in by pitting them against each other.
