Cowboys haters have gone awfully quiet thanks to George Pickens

Even though the Dallas Cowboys did not draft a wide receiver in April, and they doubled and tripled down on not wanting to trade George Pickens, the general media couldn't help but speculate that the other shoe would drop at some point.

Given this franchise's reputation, that wasn't unfair. But it sure is nice to see those predictions go up in smoke as Pickens reported for mandatory minicamp.

As expected, Pickens was limited to individual drills, but Dallas is just being careful while he ramps back up. The 25-year-old still met with the media after practice and passed with flying colors (h/t Patrik Walker, DallasCowboys.com).

"I want to bring a Super Bowl to a group of guys that never had that feeling," Pickens said. That's really the most important part of me. I'm here to definitely help the team. [I'm not thinking about] the tag and all that. It's football first. You know what I mean?"

You hear that? Us, neither. The haters have gone back into hiding after months of trying to manifest a Pickens holdout. Patience wins this time, and it feels good.

Dallas Cowboys fans' patience justified after George Pickens confirms he won't hold out

Pickens confirmed that he is not holding out this season. Reporters made sure to ask again for clarification, and Pickens didn't budge, making it very clear that he intends to participate in training camp and play out the 2026 season on the franchise tag.

The All-Pro could not have shut down the speculation any more emphatically.

Plenty of media members wondered if Pickens would demand a trade or refuse to report to mandatory minicamp and training camp. Some even floated the possibility that he'd sit out the 2026 season altogether in protest of receiving the franchise tag. (The majority of) Cowboys fans didn't budge.

What's remarkable is that this discourse continued even after Pickens signed the franchise tag. By that point, Stephen Jones had already made it clear the Cowboys wouldn't discuss an extension until after the season, leaving little room for confusion about the situation.

It's no secret that Dallas is covered differently than most teams. Their reputation precedes them. But the eagerness to manufacture a Pickens controversy out of thin air was remarkable.

At the end of the day, Pickens' decision is great news for both the Cowboys and Pickens.

For Dallas, it means a drama-free summer for the first time in years. Just as importantly, Pickens' presence at the start of training camp gives the offense every opportunity to build on the chemistry and production it established last season.

For Pickens, a holdout never made sense. If he wants to be paid like one of the NFL's elite receivers, he has to show he's more than just a playmaker. Leadership, professionalism, and reliability all factor into the equation.

By reporting to minicamp and shutting down the holdout chatter himself, he sent the exact message teams -- Dallas included -- want to hear from a player seeking a top-of-market contract.

Patience and sports fandom don't always mesh, but this is one of those times where staying the course paid off. And the haters don't have a leg to stand on.
