NFC rival might gift wrap Cowboys a solution to their glaring RB problem

There's no reason to think the Dallas Cowboys' offense won't be elite again next season. Provided health is on their side and the play at left tackle is serviceable, opposing defenses should once again have trouble keeping Dallas out of the end zone.

But that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement. Tyler Guyton has a lot to prove at LT, and the options behind starting running back Javonte Williams leave a lot to be desired.

By handling a monster workload, Williams didn’t have the same burst in the second half of the year. Yes, he played through a shoulder injury in the final month, but it was clear before then that he wasn’t moving with the same juice.

The Cowboys strangely did not touch their RB room after extending Williams, and that patience (complacency?) could pay off, as Vic Tafur of The Athletic believes that San Francisco 49ers backup Isaac Gurendo is on the chopping block.

" [Kyle] Shanahan said this would be the year he gives [Christian] McCaffrey fewer touches, and nobody believed him, so he drafted a running back in the third round. [Kaelon] Black is underrated as a receiver, the 49ers say, and they love his straight-line speed and pass blocking.

He will compete with [Jordan] James for the No. 2 role. Guerendo, drafted in the fourth round just two years ago, seems like he is buried and will be looking for a new team."

The Dallas Cowboys could wait to sign 49ers running back Isaac Guerendo if he's cut

A fourth-round pick in 2024, Guerendo is still under contract. However, the 49ers can cut him after June 1 and save just over $1 million in cap space with $176,132 in dead money, per Over The Cap.

By using a fifth-round pick on Jordan James last year and a third-round pick on Kaelon Black a few weeks ago, San Francisco has made it clear how it feels about Guerendo. Assuming the 49ers want to invest in their most recent RB investments, Guerendo could be on the way out.

Guerendo wouldn't be a sexy addition, but the Cowboys don't need a star behind Williams.

Jaydon Blue couldn't get on the field as a rookie, even with Dallas desperate for somebody on the depth chart to take the RB2 job. The team likes 2025 seventh-rounder Phil Mafah, but he has as much to prove as Blue after spending most of last season on Injured Reserve.

Malik Davis stepped up in a big way, averaging 4.8 yards per carry on 52 totes across 10 appearances, but he was without a job until August. It's unrealistic to think the Cowboys can catch lightning in a bottle twice with Davis, who'll turn 28 in November.

Amid his falling out in San Francisco, it's easy to forget that Guerendo posted a sparkling 9.89 Relative Athletic Score during the pre-draft process. With 4.3 speed, a 41.50-inch vertical, and a 1.54 10-yard split, he's exactly what the Cowboys need behind the bruising Williams.

Gurendo didn't receive any offensive touches last season, but his 3.04 yards after contact per carry as a rookie in 2024 ranked top 25 at the position, per Pro Football Focus.

The 25-year-old would benefit from a change of scenery, and he could fall into the Cowboys' lap if they play their cards right.
