Whenever the Dallas Cowboys are involved with a move, whether it be free agency or some sort of a trade, it always gets big headlines because at the end of the day, they are the Dallas Cowboys. Well, they just pulled off quite the trade with the New England Patriots. According to Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys are trading for Patriots’ quarterback Joe Milton III and a 7th round pick in exchange for a 5th round pick.

Milton III was just drafted by the Patriots last year, but New England has their franchise guy in Drake Maye who they also drafted in the first round. Maye shined as a rookie despite not having a lot to work with and the Pats are big believers in him.

With this trade, the Cowboys are getting a bit of a dynamic quarterback who showed out in Week 18 last season against the Buffalo Bills and his performance, which led to a Patriots win that week, hilariously lost the Patriots the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft.

Milton only played one game as a Patriot and he looked like a serious threat under center. Now granted, he was facing backups against the Bills but he truly showed his athleticism that could make him an eventual starter at some point in his career. In Week 18 last season, Milton completed 75.9% of his passes for 241 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for one as well. The Cowboys now have their backup for Dak Prescott, but that means that we have learned the fate about Trey Lance, who was with Dallas last season.

Joe Milton trade shows us Trey Lance's future moving forward

The fact that Dallas gave up a 5th-round pick for Milton, that clearly shows that they believe he can be a valuable backup for Prescott. He has a high ceiling and maybe, just maybe, we could see him being the Cowboys’ starting quarterback depending on what happens with Prescott the next couple of seasons.

As a former third overall pick, Lance is becoming more of a bust and it’s very possible that we see him in another uniform for 2025. He more than likely should get another shot somewhere else seeing as how he truly hasn’t had the opportunity to play. However, it more than likely won’t be Dallas anymore.
