There are a few guarantees in the NFL every year. Philadelphia Eagles fans, no matter the team's record, will boo at the first sight of adversity, the salary cap will go up, and the Dallas Cowboys will be front and center against the New York Giants in Week 1, likely in a standalone window.
There's something about Dallas and New York locking horns in primetime to usher in a new season that feels right, but to say the rivalry has lost its luster would be an understatement.
And yet, the Giants still haven’t gotten off their high horse after hiring John Harbaugh to turn things around. In fact, Harbaugh is leading that charge, talking a big game at the team’s annual Town Hall in a way Big Blue hasn’t earned (h/t Art Stapleton, NorthJersey.com).
“I could care less about what’s happened last year, the year before that, or ten years before that. Honestly, I don’t give a crap about any of it. Not one bit. All I care about is tomorrow’s practice. Because if tomorrow’s practice is the way it’s supposed to be, that’ll be one more step in the direction of being a good enough football team to kick the Cowboys’ ass.”
John Harbaugh wrote a Giants check that the Dallas Cowboys will make sure he can't cash
Not to be the grammar police, but "I couldn't care less" is the accurate phrasing. "I could care less" suggests you do care a little, which defeats the purpose. The Freudian slip truly comes for everyone.
Like any Town Hall meeting, spreading positivity was part of Harbaugh's agenda. We didn't think that required speaking in delusions, but here we are. The 63-year-old is talking as if the last decade never happened, or as if he's still coaching in Baltimore.
For those who need a refresher, the Cowboys have won nine of their last 10 meetings against the Giants, with the lone loss coming in the 2025 finale when Dallas was actively angling for better draft position. By winning, New York slid down the board to No. 5, a result that ultimately helped America's Team land Caleb Downs. So was it really even a win? You be the judge.
Dallas’ dominance in this rivalry dates back to Dak Prescott’s rookie year in 2016, with the Cowboys winning 16 of the last 20 matchups.
Prescott opened his career 0-2 against NYG, then rattled off 13 straight wins. Last season’s finale goes down as a loss on his résumé, though it comes with a major caveat, as he played just two quarters at half speed. Not only is he going to play the full game in September, but he'll have a full complement of weapons and a better defense behind him.
Again, part of Harbaugh's job at the convention was to sell hope. His Cowboys punchline drew a round of applause. Mission accomplished, but consider it bookmarked. He may be bringing a winning pedigree to East Rutherford, but he's talking like he's still coaching in Maryland.
