Jerry Jones leaves glimmer of hope regarding Micah Parsons' status for Lions-Cowboys
By Jerry Trotta
There has been a lot of talk about the Dallas Cowboys "stealing" a win against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night and that the victory was "unimpressive." When you consider that Dallas lost the turnover battle, the ugly playing conditions on the road and the list of players that were out due to injury, we'd venture to say it was an impressive win.
The Cowboys might adopt the "walking wounded" moniker if injuries continue to pile up. Micah Parsons is the clear standout of the group.
Parsons' streak of 50 consecutive games played to start his career ended Sunday due to the high-ankle sprain he suffered in the fourth quarter of Dallas' Week 4 win over the Giants. Parsons did not practice last week, but he's been hopeful to suit up for this week's high-profile matchup against the Lions.
It has seemed like a long shot that Parsons would be ready to face the Lions, but Jerry Jones kept that door ajar during his Tuesday interview on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas.
Cowboys' Jerry Jones doesn't rule out Micah Parsons for Week 6 vs. Lions
These are some very cryptic updates from Jones. That is nothing new for the Cowboys owner, but it's at least somewhat encouraging that he didn't rule out Parsons.
The Cowboys have been urged to sit Parsons through the Week 7 bye. That would give him a full three weeks to rest his ankle before Dallas visits the 49ers on Sunday Night Football in Week 8. That feels like the sound decision given Parsons' status as one of the most valuable players in the sport.
While the competition gets harder over the next month, Mike Zimmer's defense stepped up to the challenge without Parsons (and Lawrence, Bland and Kneeland) this past Sunday. While the Steelers' offense is nothing to write home about, Dallas allowed just 226 yards of offense without three of its top six most important players.
That is not to diminish Parsons' value whatsoever, but Week 5 proved the Cowboys can scratch and claw their way to a victory without their all-word defender.
Assuming Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb play better, Dallas should be able to survive one more week without Parsons. Yes, the Lions are a level up in competition relative to Pittsburgh, but wouldn't you rather have Parsons for the rest of the season than risk him aggravating his ankle in a mid-October game?
We like to think Jones and the Cowboys have the same mindset despite what the former said during his radio bit.
