That didn't take long.

The Dallas Fort Worth area was left gobsmacked and devastated when the Dallas Mavericks agreed to trade perennial MVP candidate Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for a historically poor return one year after Docnic took the team to the NBA Finals.

The trade, widely regarded as the most shocking and dumbest in basketball history, took all of the attention and heat away from Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys.

While the Cowboys have actually made some savvy moves of late, their hire of Brian Schottenheimer and objectively farcical interview process was still among the lead NFL storylines in the layover before the Super Bowl.

The Doncic trade will continue to dominate storylines for obvious reasons. That should signify to Jones to lay low and let the Mavs receive the Cowboys treatment. Jerry is officially the second-worst general manager in the DFW.

Of course, Jones doesn' know how to lay low. While he hasn't done anything astronomical, he is already up to his old tricks.

Cowboys' Jerry Jones wastes no time grabbing attention away from Luka Doncic trade

The Cowboys are seemingly closing in on hiring a running backs coach. They interviewed former fourth-round pick and current Texas Longhorns RBs coach Tashard Choice. Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram said the interview went "phenomenal."

Per Harris, Dallas also interviewed Oregon RBs coach Ra'Shaad Samples, who has extensive Texas ties and also coached RBs at SMU and in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. It seems that both Choice or Samples would be a great hire. The kicker?

Harris says both would "have to take a pay cut" if they take the job. While Harris did note that the team is putting together and "inflated offer" for whomever they hire, it remains embarrassing that Jones refuses to pay a premium for what the general public perceives are good coaches.

Fortunately for the Cowboys, it seems that Choice or Samples are really interested in the job. However, Choice is currently making six figures; he made $700,000 last season.

On top of being a great coach, he's a top-tier recruiter. While the idea of returning to the NFL to join the coaching staff of the team that drafted him is surely appealing, if Jones isn't going to pay up, why leave the Longhorns, who are primed for another deep College Football Playoff run in 2025?

Maybe Jones lucks out and ends up poaching Choice or Samples. Regardless, though, it is hard to stomach that the owner of the most valuable sports franchise in the world will not pay a premium for coaches when coaches do not count against the salary cap.
