It was practically a foregone conclusion that the NFL would pit the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants against each other in Week 1.
The Cowboys could have a five-win ceiling and still be football's biggest draw, while New York "won" the offseason by hiring Super Bowl-winning head coach John Harbaugh to restore respectability to the franchise. Even with all of the stink following the Giants over the last decade, it makes sense why they're hosting Dallas on Sunday Night Football on opening weekend.
Like any team that sold its soul to hire an accomplished head coach, Big Blue backed Harbaugh by way of spending the sixth-most of any team this offseason, doling out $195 million, per OverTheCap.
Despite the epic spending spree, Michael Haney of GMEN HQ, FanSided's dedicated Giants site, believes the team still hasn't fixed arguably its biggest flaw.
"Even after a couple of key additions, the Giants' cornerback room is still one of the worst position groups on the team," Haney wrote. "New York hasn't been able to put together a competent secondary in far too long."
Dak Prescott and the Cowboys should feast against the Giants' weak secondary
It's remarkable that Giants authorities still have major reservations about the cornerback room after the team spent nearly $200,000 this offseason.
Paulson Adebo is entrenched as CB1, but even he comes with question marks. Signed to a three-year, $54 million contract in March 2025, Adebo missed five games last season and hasn't played a full campaign since his rookie year in 2021.
Even when he was on the field, he failed to live up to the deal, ranking 76th out of 114 qualified cornerbacks with a 57.8 coverage grade, according to Pro Football Focus. He also surrendered a 66.7 percent completion rate and a 92.0 passer rating when targeted, his worst marks since 2022.
Even more concerning is that it's unclear who will start opposite Adebo. Per reports, veteran Greg Newsome II, part of New York's free-agent splurge, rookie second-round pick Colton Hood, and disappointing former first-round pick Deonte Banks are competing for CB2.
The Cowboys were linked with Hood throughout the pre-draft process, but Haney correctly noted that he had just one season of relevance after transferring from Colorado to Tennessee. That lack of experience is difficult to overlook given how much rookie cornerbacks typically struggle.
Cowboys fans saw that firsthand with Shavon Revel. While Revel's knee setback certainly didn't help his transition, he looked a far cry from the first-round talent he was widely viewed as before the injury. Long story short, Dak Prescott would love it if the Giants trotted out a first-year CB opposite Adebo.
Finally, Newsome was traded from Cleveland to Jacksonville last October. It's hardly an encouraging sign that the Browns dealt the former first-round pick in the middle of a contract year, only for the Jaguars to let him walk a few months later.
The Giants' pass rush is a force, but if it doesn't get home, Prescott is going to pick their secondary apart. He might do that regardless because of how thoroughly he owns Big Blue, which makes it all the more amusing that Harbaugh and Co. spent nearly $200 million this offseason only to end up with the same glaring questions at cornerback.
