The Dallas Cowboys can't be relied on for many things, but beating the New York Giants? That's a script New York has spent the last decade trying to flip.
And yet, it didn't stop new head coach John Harbaugh from projecting confidence that hasn't been earned. Here's what Harbaugh said at the Giants' annual Town Hall this week:
"I could(n't) care less about what’s happened last year, the year before that, or ten years before that. Honestly, I don’t give a crap about any of it. Not one bit. All I care about is tomorrow’s practice. Because if tomorrow’s practice is the way it’s supposed to be, that’ll be one more step in the direction of being a good enough football team to kick the Cowboys’ ass.”
As you can imagine, that quote quickly picked up steam, and it wasn't long until CeeDee Lamb caught wind of it. As a driving force in the Cowboys' dominance over Big Blue, Lamb laughed off Harbaugh's remark with a three-word dismissal on his Instagram.
"Lol. That's cute," Lamb wrote.
Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb claps back at Jim Harbaugh after years of owning the Giants
Some insults just hit different. Like being called "champ" or "sport" as a grown man, there’s something uniquely disrespectful about someone calling your rallying cry “cute.”
Lamb could have recorded himself running through Dallas' track record against New York, but everyone knows it's a one-sided rivalry. Leave that part to us.
"But the Giants have won two Super Bowls since the Cowboys' last championship." Sure, but if we're talking rings, Dallas still has more than New York (5 to 4) despite being 35 years younger as a franchise. The Giants were formed in 1925, while America's Team was formed in 1960. The Big Blue faithful should think twice about taking the conversation there.
Maybe Lamb would have let Harbaugh's quote slide if the Giants had shown more fight against the 'Boys. New York has lost 16 of its last 20 matchups against Dallas dating back to Dak Prescott's rookie year in 2016.
The Giants won last season's Week 18 matchup, but the Cowboys basically tanked the game for draft positioning, sitting Prescott and their other most important players in the second half. That ended a nine-game losing streak to Dallas, and it has a big, fat asterisk next to it.
A Town Hall calls for some embellishing and catering to your fans. Harbaugh had the right approach, but he lost the plot at "kick the Cowboys' a** ."
Maybe complete a season sweep over Dallas -- or win a game that Prescott starts and finishes -- before manifesting a curb-stomping.
