The Dallas Cowboys have one of the best kickers in the league in Brandon Aubrey, and that security at a position that can win or lose games has given them more than enough ammunition needed to laugh at some of their division rivals when they are screwing up. The New York Giants just made Cowboys fans feel even more appreciative of Aubrey.
The Giants are in the middle of a nightmarish kicking competition, as undrafted free agent Dominic Zvada apparently beat out veteran Jason Sanders. After cutting Sanders, who recently signed with the New York Jets, fellow 2026 kicker sweepstakes participant Ben Sauls put together a performance that may lead to him getting booted out of town as well.
Sauls missed six of his 10 field goal attempts at the most recent Giants OTA practice. Of the six misses, all of them were from inside 50 yards. One of them was short by just 47 yards. Of his four made kicks, three of them were shorter than 40 yards, and two were 33 yards exactly.
Aubrey, meanwhile, can boot 60-yard kicks with regularity.
Giants' kicker mess should make Dallas Cowboys fans feel great about Brandon Aubrey
Sauls made all eight of his kicks for the Giants last season, but if this is the performance he is putting on display in OTAs, the odds of him becoming a weapon that can make Dallas sweat during the 2026 season seem to be slipping with very kick that sails to the right and pelts ongoing spectators.
The Giants have improved as they try to keep pace with a Cowboys team that has spent a ton of money on defense, and John Harbaugh's past experience as a special teams coach could be all this team needs to find a solid kicking game, but there's no way around the fact that this was a very concerning performance for Dallas' rivals to the northeast.
The Cowboys, meanwhile, has a kicker who has been named a Pro Bowler and All-Pro in each of his first three seasons. Aubrey has evolved to a point not that unlike where Justin Tucker was with the Baltimore Ravens, as it is a genuine shock whenever the former soccer player doesn't connect on a long field goal.
If the Giants end up missing a possible game-winning kick when they meet up with Dallas, they could look back to this moment as the time where it all started to go wrong.
