The 2026 NFL Draft is here, and Dallas Cowboys fans are looking for Jerry Jones to retool the defense right away.
NFL insiders and draft analysts have speculated on many premier defenders for Dallas this offseason. To most fans, all of the rumors are just hearsay, but former Cowboys head coach Dave Campo revealed on Crown Global Media that Jones actually does listen to that outside noise.
Sometimes, even more than the inside voices in his own camp.
"One of the things that has hurt him in the past, in my opinion, is that he listened to people outside the building more than he did the people inside the building," Campo said. "When I was there, I obviously had input, but he was listening to other people more than he was listening to me."
Jerry Jones once listened to outside voices more than his own Dallas Cowboys staff when evaluating draft talent
Listening to outside sources is one thing, as great intel can come from anywhere. But not being able to trust your own scouting staff and even your head coach is another issue. Based on what fans have seen in the past with Jones' draft picks, it certainly feels like Campo could be telling the truth.
This is just another harsh reminder that Jimmy Johnson should have never left. Campo added that while Jones has always been the face of the Cowboys, he at least allowed Johnson to take control of personnel decisions, football operations, and yes, the draft.
When Johnson left, Jones took the keys to the ignition and everything changed.
Johnson helped draft Emmitt Smith, Erik Williams, Kevin Smith and Darren Woodson, which made the Cowboys the gold standard in the 1990s. The Cowboys would win three Super Bowls and become one of the best dynasties in sports history.
While Jones can take credit for plenty of Hall of Fame talent coming in since that decade, it hasn't been as consistent compared to when Johnson was around. Perhaps that says it all without even having to say too much.
Campo didn't name any names as to whom Jones may be listening to outside of the building. But with the NFL constantly being talked about on social media, TV and the radio, there are too many conflicting voices and sources to make any real sense of things.
The latest noise is, of course, about the Cowboys targeting an offensive player in the first round, specifically wide receiver Jordyn Tyson out of Arizona State. Fans better hope Jones isn't listening to the noise there, but now, fans are skeptical.
All in all, Cowboys fans really aren't surprised about Campo exposing Jones a bit. At the end of the day, it's just another example of Jerry Jones being Jerry Jones.
