Draft smoke building around wild Cowboys move fans won't love (but Dak Prescott will)

Now more than ever, football fans need to be cognizant of NFL Draft smokescreens. With draft night just over 24 hours away, insights and educated guesses from insiders and draft experts are flooding social media.

As it pertains to the Dallas Cowboys, there are varying opinions on what they'll do with the No. 12 pick. There's a consensus feeling among reporters that Dallas doesn't want to part with its second first-round pick. Everything else -- literally everything -- is open for interpretation.

Part of that is strategic on the Cowboys' part. That is exactly why it's hard to make heads or tails of the buzz building around Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. ESPN's Adam Schefter seems to think that Tyson is in play for Dallas at No. 12 (h/t Brandon Loree, Blogging The Boys).

“…So let’s keep our eyes on Dallas figuring out a way to get up the board for [Sonny] Styles or [Arvell] Reese, and let’s see which defensive hole they decide to fill. And they've done a good job drafting. Probably will again, but I do think there’s some Jordyn Tyson love there again as well…”

The Dallas Cowboys' interest in Jordyn Tyson is building before the NFL Draft

This comes after the Cowboys attended Tyson's private workout last week. It may have simply been due diligence on a touted prospect, but Schefter's report paints a picture that Tyson could be in play in a potential wipe-out scenario.

Bobby Belt of 105.3 The Fan backed Schefter, saying he believes “Dallas is high” on the former Sun Devil. While Belt doesn’t expect Tyson to be the pick at No. 12, he was adamant it “shouldn’t be dismissed” if the Cowboys aren't able to draft Arvell Reese, David Bailey, Caleb Downs, Sonny Styles, Rueben Bain, or Mansoor Delane.

It's impossible to tell if this smoke is real or fake. One thing is for sure, though, and it's that Cowboys fans will have a tough time warming up to the idea of drafting Tyson. Dak Prescott, on the other hand, would likely welcome it with open arms.

Tyson would be a luxury pick. Plain and simple. CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens form arguably the best WR duo in football. While Pickens' long-term future is up in the air, all signs point to him playing in Dallas in 2026, likely on the franchise tag.

Unless the Cowboys are serious about trading Pickens, the position does not need to be addressed this offseason. The defense still needs a lot of help, and Tyson, while a dynamic playmaker, had trouble staying healthy in college.

The former Sun Devil didn't participate in the combine or his Pro Day as he recovered from a hamstring injury. He tore up his knee in 2022 (torn ACL, MCL, and PCL). That recovery bled into the 2023 season, and he broke his collarbone the following year in 2024.

Tyson is WR1 in the eyes of several experts, but the durability concerns are legit. Any team that drafts him would be taking a risk.

The Cowboys reaped the rewards of drafting CeeDee Lamb 17th overall in 2020 when they weren’t necessarily looking for a receiver. But for a team that badly needs multiple impact defenders, taking Tyson at No. 12 -- while exciting -- could be asking for trouble.
