Cowboys have all but lost their chance to land the perfect summer upgrade

Between free agency and the NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys went to great lengths to improve their league-worst defense. While it's unclear if Jerry Jones and Co. are still on the prowl for impactful additions, fans of the team certainly aren't opposed to the idea.

One of the players Dallas has been urged to sign all offseason is former Los Angeles Chargers and Buffalo Bills pass rusher Joey Bosa, a five-time Pro Bowler and one of the more frightening forces off the edge of the last 10 years.

It's clear that Bosa still has some good football left in the tank, and it shouldn't take this long for him to find a new home. But apparently, his presence in free agency is his own choice, not anyone else's.

And the reason for that? It seems like the 30-year-old is staring down the barrel of retirement. Pro Football Talk's Josh Alpert reported that Bosa could be nearing the end of his playing career after a report from Adam Schefter's podcast revealed "it's more likely than not" he hangs up his cleats.

The Dallas Cowboys have almost no chance of bringing in Joey Bosa

“It is more likely than not that Joey Bosa  his last NFL down,” Schefter said. “Now, again, could a situation like the 49ers come along that entices him enough to come out and play again? Yeah, absolutely. We saw it happen last year with Philip Rivers, so you never know when a player is fully done and when he’s not done. But the fact of the matter is, I think if the Niners wanted to pair those two together, it probably would have happened already. I think if Joey Bosa wanted to play football, it probably would have happened already.”

Schefter did preface his comments by saying we never know if a situation could make him want to play again, but it sure sounds like Bosa is soft-launching the idea of retirement. And given he's had a successful, but injury-riddled 10 seasons in the NFL, it's no surprise his body is starting to give out.

Even if the five-time Pro Bowler did want to continue playing, Schefter made it sound like the Cowboys (or any other team for that matter) would have a tough time enticing him to join any other team but the San Francisco 49ers, who his younger brother and star pass-rusher Nick Bosa, plays for.

Apparently, Bosa has spent the offseason focusing on his golf game, though there will be no green jacket in his future. He still has plenty left in the tank, and Dallas' pass-rush could use another instant-impact player beyond Rashan Gary after Jadeveon Clowney and Dante Fowler departed in free agency, but any hope that this may happen should be thrown out the window.

The Cowboys' defense has gotten much better, but the ability to bring in someone like Joey Bosa would make Parker's unit even better.
