It's hard to have any qualms with the Dallas Cowboys' draft thus far, and the strong drafting continued into Day 3 with the selections of Penn State offensive tackle Drew Shelton and Florida cornerback Devin Moore at pick Nos. 112 and 114, respectively
They had a quick turnaround at pick No. 137. Rather than address running back, the Cowboys continued investing in Christian Parker's defense, selecting Alabama defensive lineman LT Overton.
With experience on the edge and inside, Overton is a bit of a tweener, but he projects to fill the void left by Osa Odighizuwa, who was traded to the San Francisco 49ers this offseason.
The Dallas Cowboys draft Alabama defensive lineman LT Overton with their final pick in Round 4
Why is Overton a tweener? Because of his build. At 6'3 and 287, he's too heavy to be a full-time edge player and too light to be a full-time interior defender.
Expect the Cowboys to ask Overton to bulk up to fill Odighizuwa’s role. Before the trade, Odighizuwa was projected to play the 4i or 5-technique. It’s all about finding the right fit for Overton, and that's where Dallas' new coaching staff can make all the difference.
Having Matt Eberflus in charge wouldn’t have inspired much confidence, but Parker and Co. offer far more assurance in that regard.
Value has been the theme of Day 3 for the Cowboys. The No. 112 player on the expert consensus board, Overton is another great value pick. He doesn't offer much as a pass-rusher, which is why Dallas may ask him to put on weight to eat up space in the middle and free up rushing lanes for linebackers.
Now that the Cowboys have used all three of their fourth-round picks, they don't pick again until the seventh round. Expect them to start compiling a list of potential undrafted free agents to pursue as soon as the draft concludes.
