At this rate, we're going to run out of superlatives for Caleb Downs sooner rather than later. The Dallas Cowboys' electrifying rookie defensive back continues to impress early and often.

It didn't take long to see that Downs is so clearly built for the NFL. Not just from physical and on-field standpoints, but cerebrally, he sees and approaches football with a business-like mindset far beyond his years.

Downs conducts himself like a 10-year pro, so the Cowboys are treating him like one. The club is throwing the kitchen sink at the No. 11 overall pick in the 2026 draft and seeing what he can or can't handle. So far, his demeanor and versatility have prevailed, as Jon Machota of The Athletic illustrated.

"Nothing about [Downs] makes him seem like a rookie," Machota wrote. "The majority of his defensive reps were taken as the first-team nickel defensive back. He'll be able to help at several spots, but nickel looks to be where he'll see the majority of his work. Downs also took reps at punt returner and personal protector on special teams. His work ethic. attention to detail, desire to learn and professionalism make him seem like a veteran already."

Dallas Cowboys DB Caleb Downs isn't your average rookie

Actions speak louder than words, as the saying goes, and Dallas is showing tremendous faith in Downs. They're trusting him, a safety by trade, to step in and instantly man the slot while also moving around the formation and creating matchup advantages.

Of course, anyone who watched Downs in college knows the Cowboys have a positionless weapon on their hands. He lined up inside against wide receivers, deep at safety, in the box, and even on the line. His ability to impact winning at a high level in multiple ways was largely what made him such a tantalizing prospect.

Heck, Downs is even testing his limits in the kicking game. Most squads typically keep their biggest stars away from the third unit to limit wear and tear and avoid injuries. However, Dallas is using every bit of the former Ohio State standout's well-rounded skill set after investing heavily in him earlier this offseason.

The Cowboys appear ready to hand over the keys of their defense to Downs. Together, he and first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker face the daunting task of reviving a group that was historically bad last season.

A two-time All-American, 2025 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and national champion at Ohio State, Downs' pedigree suggests he's up to the challenge.
