The arrival of June 1 typically sparks a small flurry of NFL moves, but the 2026 edition delivered one of the biggest trades in recent memory, as the Cleveland Browns are reportedly sending all-world pass rusher Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams.
The full terms have not been revealed, but NFL Network's Tom Pelissero revealed the Rams are giving up Pro Bowl edge Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, and additional compensation. A massive, massive trade that could have massive ramifications in the NFC.
On one hand, the Dallas Cowboys absolutely should have been in on Garrett, regardless of the cost. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Dallas explored the possibility, joining the Rams and, most notably, the Philadelphia Eagles in pursuing the superstar pass rusher.
While it's a bummer that the Cowboys didn't land Garrett, it comes with a major sigh of relief that Howie Roseman didn't bring him to Philly. Talk about a double-edged sword.
The Dallas Cowboys can take solace in the Eagles not trading for Myles Garrett
UPDATE: Official trade terms: The Rams are sending Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round, and a 2029 third-round pick to the Browns for Myles Garrett, per NFL Network and ESPN.
It will be fascinating to see how interested the Cowboys were in acquiring Garrett, if at all. Just a few months ago, they were willing to give up as much as the No. 12 pick this year and a 2027 second-rounder for Raiders' standout edge rusher Maxx Crosby.
The Cowboys did not make another offer for Crosby after the Ravens backed out of their deal when concerns about his knee surfaced during the medical evaluation.
Garrett does not have Crosby's injury history -- not even close -- and he's a much better player, so Dallas should have been willing to give up a haul for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.
It's unclear if they even made an offer or balked at the Browns' asking price, but we know the Cowboys' front office cherishes draft capital and doesn't like to step outside its comfort zone. Garrett is exactly the type of player you "lose" a negotiation for, however.
Ultimately, the Rams have something the Cowboys do not: a young, ascending edge rusher in Jared Verse who's accumulated 45 quarterback hits in two seasons.
The Eagles, meanwhile, could have dangled a package built around Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, Cooper DeJean, or Quinyon Mitchell, and picks. Fortunately for Dallas, Philly instead used two third-round picks during the 2026 NFL Draft to acquire pass rusher Jonathan Greenard from the Vikings, which likely dissuaded Roseman and Co. from swinging big for Garrett.
That's a win for the Cowboys, but even with a clear path to the NFC East crown, their quest to reach a first Super Bowl since 1995 just got a whole lot tougher. The Rams are a juggernaut.
